View Full Version : Leaky TF
Gday guys, my TF has a few leaks. i think its mainly powersteering fluid as i have to top it up about every month. but it seems to be getting worse.
Dad is getting quite angry at me leaving oil on his driveway.
What does this mean and what needs to be done? the fluid looks just like power steering fluid too, although i havent gotten underneath the car to see where its coming from.

Check under your car to see where it is gathering. Look in the engine bay, around the left side of engine and just behind the engine for signs of fluid. Your steering rack is just at the back of the engine bay, inspect there for leaks. I had a leaky power steering pump which eventually failed and it was expensive to get replaced. Better off finding the problem rather than leave it to get worse.
I also recommend looking under your transmission, just to be safe.
good luck :)
Seeing as you have to top up the power steering reservoir every month, it's a sure bet that your leak is from the power steering. Rack and pump leaks are never cheap to fix properly, and on my last 4 cars when I've had leaks I've managed to slow or stop the leak by using one of the many "Stop Power Steering Leak" products. Last brand I used was Nulon on my VS Commodore 2 years ago - my daughter now has that car and it still doesn't leak fluid from the PS rack or pump so I'd reckon use one of these and get some breathing space whilst you decide if you want to spend big dollars.
To keep your Dad happy, carry a can of degreaser in the car and spray the spots away, or put a heap of sand under where you park.
Put the car on ramps tonight. Appears its leaking out the powersteering pump, out the side gasket. Anyway it was all over the cross member on the right hand side. Might try some stop leak and see how that goes.
Unless anyone has any other ideas?

There is a power steering pressure release valve. I hear they can get stuck open or leak - might be worth a check?
Mine leaked the same and I had it replaced. lets hope you don't have to go the replacements route!
