Is it out of the ordinary to not have an inner and outer shim (no shims) in the calliper assembly?

I thought it was odd but carried on anyway.

I remember my 2nd gen had them and the service manual I have shows them for the 3rd gens.

Pads last done by a mechanic!

Let me know what you think, and if I should have them & what are the consequences of not having them.

Thanks

Any feedback appreciated!

Put new pads on by TJ and there were 2 shims per pad.

Thanks for the confirmation PJUK

I have a feeling that the last mechanic (previous owner) has done the brakes and left them out - or something. According to the repair manual the rear pads dont have the shims.

Just want to know if there are any adverse effects to not having them installed, pads fall out, less wear as they are not pushing together enough... anything I have no idea.

Cheers

No adverse affects other than a chance of increased noise due to the pads vibrating against the caliper cradle but its no big deal, just use some CRC stop brake squeal paste on the pad backing where the pad backing meets the caliper cradle and you shouldn't have any issues.

Hey thanks for the advice - probably cheaper than sourcing some shims...

I changed the pads because they sounded like they were scraping - metal on metal, but when I took the old ones off the had more than enough meat left. Maybe the lack of shims was causing that sound. The sound stopped with new pads on. Yeah I'll give that CRC a try.

Cheers

If you still get some noise, sometimes the lip on the outer edge of the disc can rub against the edge of the pad. Its good to get the discs machined if there is runout but you can champfer or file the edge of the pad down slightly at a 45 degree angle so it doesn't rub against the lip of the disc)

Just for info, I recently replaced front and rear pads, no shims were present so I used none and used no pad goo. No squeals or squeaks. Bendix pads.

Yeah well we already figured it wont cause to many dramas. But I will say you may have noise when the pads eventually wear - like I did. I dont have any noise after changing either.
