View Full Version : TJ engine cut out and won't start
My 2003 TJ sedan cut out under acceleration up a hill and died. Got it towed home. I have not been able to start it since. It has spark, turns over easily but no hint of firing. Tried the diagnostic thing - no codes showing. Put in new battery - no difference. I have not had any problems with the car before. It has done over 200,000km trouble free. Can anyone help?

Fuel pump?
I did think of that - but not sure where it is. Is there some way of testing whether there is fuel to the rail or power to the pump?
Have checked fuel - no fuel is getting to the fuel rail. Can anyone tell me where the fuel pump relay is?

Turk,
If you go to www.lisho.net and follow a couple of links, you can download a PDF file of the original genuine Mitsubishi Workshop Manual for your car. It has all the good info, including circuit diagrams, and also troubleshooting flowchart sections for tracing faults - its the manual that Dealer Service Depts would use. I reckon a 5 min download could save you a world of pain with your problem - the advantage of the manual is that it tends to suggest checking what Mitsi reckons is the most-likely problem first, then in order of how "random" the fault is causing a particular symptom. I haven't checked the manual yet, but later on I may get a chance to and let you know which is the relay - its liklely to be in the relay box in the engine bay.
Thanks Phil, hopefully that will help.

relay is in the centre console
pump is under the rear seat... i'd suggest getting in there and testing the pump for power/earth/signs of life

A common problem with TJ magnas is the wire connection into the Body Electronics Module. Its located under the steering wheel a small black box about 120mm square. The three wire plugs have a bad connection sometimes even when fully plugged in.
Try pushing the one with the brown wire in harder and even secure it there somehow.
