Just wondering if there is anyone on here with a 3rd with custom kicks to fit a midrange?

Reason why i ask is because i have some 4inch Focal Polyglass Drivers coming over and i would like to see if anyone else has done something similar, since these kicks dont look like they will be easy.

Is that the part in the footwell against the centre consol? Might be easier to make a thick fiberglass pair with MDF backing and cut that out

The on the right hand side of the drivers footwell, and left and side of the passenger foot well, so opposite side to what you were thinking.

I have seen someone put 4" woofers on both sides of the kick panels, but not in a magna 3rd gen, can you not put them in your door trims?

For SQ purposes i would not like to.

Had a look in my car and all I could see was carpet, maybe Im missing kick panels from my own car as well as my wreck... Maybe something up under and pointing at the floor? Or just below the steering wheel and to the right, with the pass. side one on the glovebox face? Take a pic of where you're thinking and MS.Paint in some red circles?

"CUSTOM" kick panels - this is the art of making up a board to house speakers and normally to angle them towards the listeners.
These are custom built interior parts, not something that Mitsubishi put in our Magnas/380s.

Cheers.

Ah, I see. by kickpanel I just assumed the plasticy shield bits by your feet that get kicked every now and then, and making one of them rigid and fitting a speaker rather than adding a whole new panel.
http://jr.stangnet.com/kick.htm
make an MDF ring the size of the speaker, support it far enough off a backing board that your speaker will fit, wrap a cloth over it, wet with resin, glass over, bog, smooth, and paint/carpet/vinyl wrap/finish however. Looks like a pain in the ass time consuming thing. Are you after a certain volume for the box, or as much space as you can get w/out having them excessively large?

I understand how to do it, i wanted pics of other members successes if any.

I have begun to do it, and since it seems no one else here has done it as of yet i thought i would post pics up of my progress.

Then applying 3-4 layers of glass. The fiberglass matting is laid and then a mixture of resin and catalyst is brushed onto the matting.

So when the glass is cured after a few hours (i left the drivers one over night, and the passenger one about 3-4 hours) its time to position your speakers, and then glue the trim rings in place. I found on axis worked best so i had to then use a hot glue gun and alot of glue to hold them into place.

This was my first position.

But i wasnt happy with that so i moved onto adjusting the passenger side one, and voila its where i wanted it.

Looks good, but will the speakers impact the floor area? Trouble with newer cars is kick panels are tiny, and even non existent. My old HQ could fit 6 inch speakers no worries in the kicks!

If by impact you mean restrict foot room? Then yes the drives side will be a bit tricky, but you will see when im done that there is still enough room.

Problem i have here, is i bought some beefy 4 inch drivers that are meant for midbass, not just midrange, generally a dedicated midrange wont have such a bit magnet so therefore would leave more room around the pedal.

here is a shot of the driver.

how are you going to run your kickpanel and door speakers together?

peaandham
05-07-2011, 04:26 PM
The 6.5inch drivers in the doors will be running off channel 1 & 2 off the amp and then 3 & 4 will be run to a Polyglass Cross-over which runs to the mids and tweeters. So it will be running semi active.

Nope the instant i buy a car the back speakers are the first things to go, they are only there for passengers and are no good when it comes to competing in an SQ Competition.

Thats a CD player there, good ol two channel, and when you are at a concert the stage is at the front, so is the music, and very well staged too I might add.

The guys who have it wrong are DVD players that repeat the sounds that should be coming from the front, at the back.
Then it should be dolby set up. all the tunes from the front stage, and clapping from the rear.

Nice work, peaandham, one step short of eccentric is passionate.
I BI-Amped my Focals today, its rewarding to say the least.....

Focals really love to be run active.

Very cheap trimming tool, its a Ozito Rotary tool from Bunnings the cheaper version of the great "Dremel" the disc im using it a grinding disc but its reinforced which makes it great for cutting through the glass.

I headed to spot light and bought 100% Cotton for $9.95pr meter and i only needed the one. They were wrapped and the reason i used the staples is so the material is flush on the mdf ring other wise i will have an uneven mounting surface.

Catalyst mixed with resin was then applied to the material once it was pulled very tight.
