Hi guys,

Is it possible to put a TH 5 speed into my KF verada? I assume a centre console mod will be needed for the shifter?

Just wondering if I will encounter any other problems?

CHEERS!

Is this for auto to auto?
I am also curious about this. I assume it will need the 5 speed ECU and possibly additional wiring as a minimum

HI mate, yes for the auto.

The 4 speed has shit it's pants (so to speak) so I'm thinking a 5 speed would be just as good to swap in

This has been covered many times

For starters, TH did not come with a 5sp auto, so you have a TJ VRX or later Verada 5sp auto

You will need to do a lot of work such as engine looms, ecu, bem, TCL etc etc. Can be done as I have one in my TE wagon but as I said, is a lot of parts to get and a lot of work to do properly

OK I stand corrected, is the TH 4 spd a tippy? If so, I am assuming it would take just as much effort to fit it yes?

Sorry for the noobism, my verada is my daily and gets neglected to suit project cars... :s

Thanks for the help thus far.

Madmagna, what is "bem"?
And, does the cost of going to 5 speed negate doing it, ie, would it be cheaper/better to just buy a 5 speed car?

And Brettjon, are you talking about going from standard 4 speed auto to 4 speed tiptronic? I assume the work involved will not be substantially less as it would still need an ECU and additional wiring.
Also, can you explain what happened to the gearbox, if there were any warning signs, and the mileage on it?

The boxes are the same for alll four speed autos,no difference, the tippy is just a snazzy electronic way to change the gears,if your box has pooed itself, then it would be just as easy to get another 4 speed auto and chanfe it over,or depending on cost,go manual

BEM...body/engine/module ??? Controls all the light dimming and various electrical systems in your car

Trans is 290,000 km or very close to. I don't believe it's ever been rebuilt. It started not wanting to go into gear after driving for an hour or so. it took a good 3-4 seconds at some times. then it started engaging/disengaging drive randomly.

The reason I'm asking about swapping to a 4 or 5 spd "tippy" box is because they seem to be alot easier to find then the 4 speed non tip box that my car came standard with.

How much "warning" time did you have for the transmission?
And how much are the gearboxes from wreckers that you're finding?

As it appears all the 4 speed gearboxes are identical whether they have the tiptronic or not. So the newest, lowest mileage one is the way to go.

warning time..... about 3 - 4 months of driving.... Then one day, hard out slipping in first and second with moderate accelaration available only when third engages.

Pricing ranging from 450 to 600 (600 being for a box that shows signs of being a reco.... indexed bolts, gasket goop, good quality oil on the dipstick)

Oh and also, I do not want a manual..... Basically I'm looking at putting in a box (4 speed now decided) that I will be able to install and drive just like it should. I care not for tiptronic shifting or manual. I just want my daily to be my daily haha

Thanks for all the help so far, this is clearly the right place to ask these questions.

Have you inquired about the cost of rebuilding your original unit?
As 450-600 + fitting + fluids will be over 1K and you don't know how long it will last for. A rebuilt one I think should last as long as a new one would (so, another 290K km)

the cost of fitting bothers me not, I can handle that part, fluids are already sorted so that's another plus. a reco exchange I'm looking at $1500 plus fitting.

I'm doing a gearbox replacement on the chaep so I can put some real funds into the trans in my challenger, which NEEDS to be stronger.

I got a TJ VR-X 5spd Auto Box and the mechanic put it in my TF..

That's as much as I know.. I know it was definitely done.. I got my 4spd box back after it was done..
