Apologies if this has been asked before, I did search but it didn't seem clear to me.

I'm getting 'pulsing' through the pedal under braking from the mighty TJ Sports Magna. The blokes at work tell me that my disc rotors need to be skimmed, or replaced.

So to get them off, do I just take off the brake caliper and the rotors will then pull off the studs (with persuasion if necessary)? Or, is there more to it?

Thanks for the help!

I normally take off the pads, push back the cylinder take the whole caliper off the suspension and the disc just slides out. Remember that you have to probably re-adjust park brake for the rear rotors when reassembling.

You remove the caliper, if the rotors are stuck on, you will notice 2 8mm threads in the rotor face (on the hat) use a bolt to press the rotors off

I had the same issue and replaced all four rotors. The front rotors pretty much come off in your hands when the brake calipers are removed. The rear ones needed some assistance with the insertion of a spare bolt into the bolt holes of the rotor.

Just in case you don't know, make sure to remove some brake fluid from the reservoir to leave room for the excess when you squeeze the calipers open to get the brakes off the rotor. Especially if you're replacing the pads at the same time (which is a good idea).

The good news is - it works. Smooth braking for me now.

Thanks for the helpful input guys.

Just thinking, will the pads on the rear just push straight back in once I crack the bleed valve, or they the screw back in type? I remember it once took me about 5 hours to figure that out with an old Fairlane....

Pretty sure they're push, the screw types are only used on cars that use the normal brake pads for the handbrake as a failsafe from memory. magnas have a little drum brake inside the rear hubs with their own shoes.

bit of a threadmine... any advice on really rusted on rear rotors, just dont want to come off

it broke the metal around the 8mm bolt hole i can get them kind of loose but then they wont budge after that

If they are coming loose it is your handbrake shoe not being wound back that is causing the issue

. . . . .rusted on . . . . . kind of loose . . . .

Which is it? Rusted solid or kind of loose? Can't have both!

lol

What is probably happening is that the drum in getting hung up on the brake shoe. Back the brake shoe off and and it will slide off.

(oops - mal beat me to it.)
