View Full Version : What is a BEM

I was reading through a whole heap of the Forums last night and happened to come across mention of this particular part "BEM". In the context of the description it was mentioned that this controlled many things including vehicle lighting. I am curious to know if this would have any control on the instrument cluster lighting and in particular the ability to control; the dimming of the dash and heater control switches.
Ever since I have fitted my new dble din head unit, I have over bright lights on the heater controls and the dash cluster is about medium to low in brightnes and no matter how many dimmer switches I try, none seem to make any difference to the lighting brightness. I have even tried a different dash to see if there is anything there that may have been at fault but still no change.
So, is this BEM a possibility and if so, where can I find the bloody thing and how hard is it to change?
Cheers, Jeff

you have in your second paragraph mentioned your issue, you are wasting your time with other parts when the issue started with your head unit install
My guess is that either you have used the wrong wire for the dim function or the unit is pushing 12v back through the dimmer wire thus making your dash lights bright
THe BEM has no function as far as the dash lights go, it is simply a matter of turn on the parkers, dash lights come on and are controlled in brightness by the dimmer switch
Disconnect the head unit completely, try then, if still an issue, remove your wiring and try again then, I recon you will find the issue gone. Once done trace your wiring, find the issue and correct
A BEM will do several things, will give timed activity to windows after power down to allow them to go up, is your receiver for your remote control, gives the ecu the immob code when key is used, controls the time delay in the interior lights and in verada allows them to dim down instead of simply turn off plus a few other little tricks it has up its sleve. Dash lighting is not one of them

Thanks for the quick reply Mal. Yes, it did start with the said connection of the wire in question, but according to the installation book it is the correct one. One of the first things I did was to double check that I had indeed hooked up the correct wire color for the lighting. I guess you cannot trust the books and I think I will just leave it off completely. Hope it has not done any irreversible damage. Still I will be chasing you in a few months for that new setup for electric windows etc, so a new loom and all will be going in and hopefully that will be the end of all of that anyway.
Cheers and thanks very much,
Jeff

If your head unit lights up without splicing into the factory illumination wire, leave it off,HU now days tend not tot use the vehicle wiring to light themselves up.

I thought the idea behind this was to dim the headunit lights when the dash lights are on.

Again, most HU now days have a option to have as bright or dim display, the last six HU i have had have had this feature.
