View Full Version : galant motor into TR
so the old tr has finally revved its last rev on the way back from the farm this morning and somehow threw a piston up and lodged it into the bonnet ( dynaliner win )
so im wondering if its worth rebuilding or just getting another one and i remembered paul put a galant motor into his
just wondering if anyone else has done it or knows if paul ever put a guide up to the changeover
and anyone remember the actual generation motor he used so i can start looking at prices, i got about 2k saved up so far as i honestly thought the engine was going to go shorty after rego last year and tax time is just around the corner so i might be able to squeeze another 1k there ( missus allowing :D)
btw ill throw pics up of the damage when i can get out to nrma yard where it was towed pending my organising where its going next ( my place or a workshop to do the transplant as i just dont have the time)

Yes it can be done, if you don't have a V6 you have to modify the left hand engine mount :)

Which galant motor are you talking about? are you talking about the 4g63 (2lt dohc turbo and non turbo) that is found in the late 80's early 90's vr4 and gsr galants and alot of other mitsu's.
As far as I know no one on AMC has put one of these in a 2nd gen. But i think they have been put in 1st gens and 3rd gens by amc members. Since these engines have been used in so many different cars they can be found in both fwd drive orientations hence they can in theory be made fit both 2nd gens and 3rd gens.
If you are talking the 2.5ltr twin turbo found in the later vr4 galants and legnums i don't think anyone has tried to put one in a 2nd gen as they a the wrong orientation but would be suitable for a 3rd gen.
The conversion Sparky linked to is not a galant engine. Its is a 3ltr twin turbo found in the gto/3000gt. The non turbo version of this is found in the 1st gen diamante and has the very similar bottom end as the 3ltr found in aus 2nd gens so is a popular conversion.
was thinking the early 90's galant so that would be the engine

Honestly i would not bother with fixing or replacing the engine in the TR. If you can scrape together 3 to 4 grand like you said you can get an early 3rd gen for that kind of money nowdays. Plus there are lots of other good cars you can get for that money. Or even find a good low k's v6 2nd gen so you can transfer whatever mods you have and spend the change making it 100% perfect mechanically.
An engine coversion to a 4g63 will definately cost more than 3-4 grand if you have it done properly. I have made the mistake of buying a car that had a conversion done to it that was a bit of a backyard job. I had it for less than a year and ended up selling it for what i paid for it but i had spent around 3k on fixing things on it during that time just to get it running properly. Didn't even get a chance to do the mods i had planned for it. It was 3k down the drain and i learnt my lesson.
Just replacing or fixing the current engine would make more sense if your that attached the car but it would still be financially a bad idea due to the age of the car and 2nd gens are just not worth anything nowdays.
