View Full Version : oils ain't oils
New here 1994 3L V6 Verada xi, 135,000.
Owned it for about 8 years in great nick but the last oil change I did I was told to put 15w40 in and now 6,000km later I have had a bit of oil seepage around rockers and possibly a new leak from the passenger front bank cam seal.
I have just done another change with filter and went back to 20w50. I Don't know whether the oil is the cause of the leaks or if it is just due for some seal changes and a timing belt service.

ts unlikely the oil did anything, but coincidences are a pain.
personally with such low kms on the engine 20w50 is a rather thick oil to be using. thicker oils create more oil pressure when cold but also take longer to reach the top end of the motor. I cant remember what the manual says, though i have read it before. The front cam seal is a pain but the rockercover seal isnt so bad. If the timing belt needs doing you might as well get those done at the same time. you are already up for a few hundred for that and most of it comes apart anyways for the belt change. DO you have any smoke on startup? this was the kms that my verada stated to get seeping valve stem seals, which is a common issue on the v6's especialy the autos.
20w50 is the thickest recommended in the operators manual but anything from 10w30 up seems to be fine for temps between -10 to 50 celcius atmosphere temps. Yeah that coincidence thing shows you've been around. No smoke on start up but Iv'e been through two mufflers and now need an intermediate pipe due to rot (short trips) apart from that I have only replaced one battery and had the front discs skimmed. Might as well do the lot then. I have read that the gates kits are fine but my local spare parts place only stock dayco kits which I have read that the belts are fine but the seals are not. They also only have the water pump seperate of which I have read that their is another section that should be replaced at the same time. Looking through the filler cap the oil seemed to be flicking around quite well.
Oil & filter change did the trick no more oil leak.
