How many people have had no issues with their auto gearbox?
Please state engine size, 4 or 5 speed, and both total km on the car and km since you've owned it.
Thanks

TJ VR-X (July 2001) with 5 speed tiptronic.
Purchased the car with 71,000km.
Fluid was flushed at 95,000km. There was a chunk of metal floating around in the fluid which wasn't a good sign.
But she's now at 153,000km and still drives very smoothly. Having the fluid changed every 20-25,000km seems to help.

'02 KJ2 Verada. 3.5L V6 5spd tiptronic auto, bought at 170,000km currently has 187,000km odd and transmission flushed at 180,000km. Mixed driving style and quite a bit of use in tiptronic mode. No issues thus far, but I will be installing a transmission cooler soon as a precaution- along with getting he gearbox looked at and another flush/service at 200,000km.
02 KJ2 AWD Verada.
3.5L 6G74 SOHC
Had it since 131360km. Till now its on 159960km. Due for a trans flush, also a front and rear diff oil change. Will get a trans cooler later.

2002, 3.5L TJ Advance, 4 speed automatic. Bought the car with 100,000kms, now at around 135,800kms.
Only issue worth noting was a little bit of flaring when changing between 3rd and 4th at about 130,000kms. The transmission had not been flushed since the 100,000kms service before I owned the car.
Had the transmission fluid flushed and refilled at Mitsubishi, haven’t had a problem since.

How much does a flush cost? And is it just drain the old fluid, swap filter, and add new fluid?

TF 3.0 auto. Now belongs to parents. 160000km. Auto fine. Just book servicing.
Now have a manual Ralliart so dont need to worry about the trans dying but the clutch is another issue.......
Auto 380 is giving us more problems than the Magna ever did.
How much does a flush cost? And is it just drain the old fluid, swap filter, and add new fluid?
It involves running the engine to pump the oil out and draining the oil from the trans sump in sequence...then new fluid is added and the process repeated till the oil you are draining runs clear. Easy to DIY and cost will be $120 for 3 X 4 litre trans oil. No filter on later models. Full instructions are in the downloadable workshop manual.;http://www.lisho.net/?page_id=3

TW wagon, 4sp tippy, bought at SA govt auctions 27k, now 77k. Absolutely fine apart from (i) flaring, fixed by new fluid and re-learn, and (ii) judder at 60kph in 4th, fixed by adding Shudda-fix.

The transmission flush is pretty much as hako described. Mitsubishi charged me $163.70 for the service, which was inclusive of the 5L of SP3 transmission fluid they used.

Bought 2003 TL Magna with 70k now has 145k. Transmission all good. I tow a boat now - see pick. I went to get a transmission cooler fitted while I was on holidays. Transmission flush + cooler + labor to fit at an auto specialist in Caloundra = $1000. Needless to say I didn't get it done. The guy suggested I just change the fluid every 20k and tow in third.

Old Ralliart.
3.5L(R), 5 speed tiptronic.
Had... 103,000ishkms on it when it was totaled. Was hesitant to change gears sometimes, after dropping the fluid there was no metal and after filling it just above full with new oil it was perfect.

NOT still running well? lol
Meh. You buy a car, you drive it, it breaks or it doesn't break, you fix it if it does. No point worrying about all the little things (and not so little things) that might go wrong.
Manual box doesn't break, but the diff might shatter on the next burnout, and the clutch wears out eventually. Auto might fracture its wave spring. It breaks, you fix. Simple. lol
Just put that on your list of things you can't be bothered worrying about. lol I have.

2003 KL AWD Verada - 5speed Tippy.
Purchased at 55,XXXKM
Now at: 172,302KM (in 5 years)
added an external transmission coooler to the system prior to gettin boost on the engine too
(so far) not a single issue with it - and it ran with the engine on boost for over a year as well.
These days, it gets driven more casually than when I got it, but I do quite enjoy exploring the limits of AWD grip and launchability... where safe / legal to of course.
Let the last trans flush lapse sliightly by 10,000km and the fluid was still bright red like it was brand new - no metal or anything in it.
of course now I have typed this - the trans will dump its lunch all over the driveway tomorrow morning....

KH, bought new in 2000, serviced at the regular 45K mark, never a problem, shifts are smooth now at 245k's, but possiy not quite as smooth as when new, lol.
Back when it was only a year old it went to limp mode after a service, took back to the dealer and watched in horror as they stuffed around putting my $50K car in and out of gear with a loud thump, 2 hours later they figured out the electrics connector was wet from steam
cleaning they had done! I always remind mechanics to blow that out now.
Fingers crossed...
1995 KS V6Xi bought in 1997 with 45K. Driven hard. Trans died around 250K and new one fitted.
2005 KW GTVi bought new in mid 2005. Traded in at 140K with no transmission issues. It does have an external trans cooler fitted early in its life. Driven hard and used tippy all the time.

TH 4 speed - auto replaced under warranty at 40,000km due to humongous crash into gear at times - they said a contaminated batch of oil had damaged clutches in a number of cars - 320,000 km later it was still sweet with 1 flush
TJ 5 Speed - bought at 130,000km and it probably never had a flush in it's life - fluid was engine sump black - flushed and now clear and "touch wood" no problems.

my TF 3.0L 4speed auto - never skipped a beat, it has 280,000kms on the clock and shifts smoothly and directly as a new auto would.
i think its the later 5 speeds that screw up. judging from what i have read on this forum, mainly the sport tiptronic 5 speeds break their wave spring and kill the auto box

yeah i read that on here too. that mitso started putting in 'upgraded' wave springs from a certain year. just going off memory and i could be wrong i think it was 2005 or 2006 onwards.
in any case i rarely open up my 3.0L at WOT. maybe once a month just to clear out any debris that may be in the throttle body, intake and injectors

I have two TL'S, an AWD and a wagon for work. The wagon gearbox oil was black and took 16 litres of fresh oil to get the oil to look half decent and made a big difference to the gear changes. It has 253,000 on it now and still runs smooth. The AWD was well looked after when I bought it, complete service history and gearbox oil was still red and seemed ok on gear changes when I drove it 800k,s home from where I purchased it. It has 190,000 k's now. I had a gearbox flush , transfer case and diff oils done on it soon after I bought it.

KH 4 speed auto purchased 2005 - gearbox fine. Converted electronically to tiptronic shift, still fine. Eventually replaced with 5 speed auto when doing 6G75 conversion. Both fine. (I miss this beast - Sold 2012)

If you read the mileages other members got out out of their TH-TL 4-speeds, 250,000km+ is achievable with proper maintenance, moreso out of a TW with the revised wavespring, such as yours.

My KH is running the same as it did over 4 years ago, had 203k when I bought it has 281k now, I found out about the wave spring problem just after I bought it and felt I was on borrowed time 4 years ago but still running ok so I don't even think about it anymore.
In the 99 TH Altera 3.5 with 4 speed normal auto. 312,000km and no signs of anything to go wrong.
Wont know how long it will actually last for as I am putting in a manual (yay, finally!) by the end of year and hopefully the perfectly good auto will go to someone with use for it.
