I'm no expert, but i've been trying to figure out a good sub/amp setup to install.

was thinking about this sub:
http://www.jbhifi.com.au/car-sound-gps-navigation/sub-woofers/jl-audio/12-inch-300-watt-rms-sub-in-box-sku-52303/

and pairing with this amp:
http://www.jbhifi.com.au/car-sound-gps-navigation/amplifiers/kicker/400-watt-rms-amp-sku-63355/

They seem low powered compared to other setups, but i wasn't sure maybe they'd be more sensitive or something? Would this give me alot of punch/bass or would it be seriously lacking?

Mainly wanted for Rock/Dubstep music. So i wanna feel the kick drum and bass drops, is this enough to do so? should i be looking at something else?

Also the amp is 400w RMS and the Sub is 300w RMS, just figured that'd give a bit of headroom so theres no clipping or distortion to wreck the sub. am i way off?

with this setup too, would there be any need to amp the rest of the speakers?, would the bass be overpowering at all? or would it blend in nicely?

anyway, probably some dumb questions in there somewhere, but i want something good. and i don't know what to be looking for...

I have up to 2grand for the whole system if i want, but just trying to see if i can get something decent, but simple.

please get back to me asap if possible. thanks heaps =]

Try this instead
http://www.jbhifi.com.au/car-sound-gps-navigation/amplifiers/jl-audio/600-watt-rms-amp-sku-99600/
Just a few more dollars, but able to give 400 @ 4 ohms instead of the amp you had which will do only 200 @ 4 ohms, I'd rather go easy on the 400 watt amp, than try to push the 200watt 4 Ohm and clip, distort and destroy the 4 Ohm speaker you have selected.

That amp would do fine for a two ohm speaker and leave you headroom, but the jl woofer you have is a 4 ohm jobbie.
Most quality mknoblocks list there two ohm rating first, you have to.dig a bit further for the four ohm rating.

Alternatively, that is good sub to run off a four channel amp, with channels 3 n 4, bridged for a sub.

awesome, thanks for that =] something i probably wouldn't have figured out by myself!

Any guess/idea how much volume/pressure the setup will actually give once installed? cos one thing i dont wanna do is buy, install and then wish i had alot more bass. like i said i have plenty of money to spend so no worries there.

One more thing. the JL is a class D amp yeah? is there actually much difference anyway? i just heard that they're better because they use power from your battery more efficiently or something.

If you have plenty of dough, and you like JL audio. Put their 12" W6 in a slot ported box powered by the infamous Slash 500/1 .
Heaps of Quality and Heaps of volume.

But they will leave the poor little sonys in your doors for dead. I'd suggest you have a look here.

New D-class work really well, as for a sub amp, you would never tell the difference, unless it was crappy. and yes generally more efficient, Not something to worry about in a system 1000 watts or less.

But I'd be getting out there and look around at stuff, and, if you find an honest guy in a good shop who'll look after you. There is nothing better than professional support, even if it costs a few biccies more, it seems you have lots of dollars and little knowledge, this is a path I'd thoroughly recommend.

There is a partcular woofer that I thinking about upgading to, and if I had the space to keep my old 2.5 CF slot posted box, it would have been ideal for you.
It was hair moving on 380 Watts @ 4ohm in that box.

There is also JL 12"W3 in a JL High Output Chamber coupled Wedge (coffin) that sounds as good as it looks, as long as it fits inbetween the wheel hubs, it should still give you wheel and jack access.

Linky - Here (http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_enclosures.php?menu=11&prod_id=470)
500-600 bucks though.
Which is actually a pretty good deal for woofer and custom - good looking box.

Plus its a 500w 2 ohm woofer, meaning you can get a smaller mono, but I'd use the 600watt Mono I posted earlier.

I have a Alpine 1200watt amp/JL 600 watt speaker combo ATM..... But gains set Looooooowwwwww.
And beleive me, a $300 bass speaker in a great box will kick the ass of a $600 bass speaker in a generic box.

And I suggest you take a look around over at MEA (http://www.mobileelectronics.com.au/forums/), its where the guys like MR SPL, and peaandham go for advice on gear and setups.
Have fun.......

Oh and Qld is damn big place, where are you????

cool, i'm at JB hifi at the moment, he recommended the same sub/amp combo as you did SHOOT. The other one your posted is here too. how much difference between that and the first JL? is it worth the extra money? also do you know if it will fit? it seems big... any idea measurement is between the wheel hubs is? 1999 Magna TH Sports

Sorry, I have a gas tank in the way, but the slash 500/1 is an awsome amp that you'll keep for years, and they get good resale too.

Just off topic a little.

IMO, Generally, JB have would be lucky to have a good audio person there, they don't pay enough, and they don't like employing ppl full time, all the best heads have moved on.

Unfortunately, competetive pricing does this, you think you are paying less, but you either don't get what you want, and have to repurchase, or they are incompatible, incorrectly mated to systems, and not sold with the right connections/accessories to perform to their capabilities. Or with little thought for growth.
