Hello all just a quick question.

Is there any way to tell if my Tj is an Advance or a Solara.
My car is a 2000 Tj, It has 2 tone paint no badges at all.
Is there any way to tell which one it is by vin or anything?
It also has aftermarket 18's so no help there.
Is there an option code on the compliance plates to tell me?

I will post pics when it stops raining.

A Solara is a Magna Advance, just with special two tone paint and alloy wheels, maybe some other extras too.

I know what an Solara is, But i was just wondering besides paint is there any other way to tell.
Cause i think the paint job is just painted to look like a solara. and i dont want to tell people its a solara if its not.

Have a look under the bonnet at the compliance plate for the VIN. it should say 6MMTJ8 and then it will have a letter, if the next letter is an A you have an advance.

For example i have a TF advance so mine is 6MMTF6A................

Maybe your car is a Executive painted like a solara? does it have power windows, cruise? does it have the factory Solara alloy wheels? as Rush said check the vin number, that will tell you if its a Advance or not, wont tell if you if it is a Solara though as a Solara is a Advance.

I'd say its just a debadged Solara, thats sure what it looks like, I think the colour scheme is the only differance between the Advance and the Solara, I might be wrong though.

What colour is the bottom surround of the grill. Solaras had it body coloured whereas Advance is just black. As for paint codes, here is a listing of A-Z (http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/colour_codes_mitsubishi_A-L.htm) and M-Z (http://www.uniquecarsandparts.com.au/colour_codes_mitsubishi_M-Z.htm) paint codes. Just check the plate and the owners manual (inside front or rear cover etc or the service manual) for matching codes. Yours should be island blue over silver/platinum. There should be a plate in the middle of the firewall in the engine bay which should have the colour codes. It is normally next to the VIN plate.

A quick phone call to the Customer Assistance Centre (1300 13 12 11) should be able to clear it up for you.
...or send them your details & query online at http://www.mitsubishi-motors.com.au/contact-us

I'd say definately a Solara, dont know anyone in their right mind who would respray a car and go for two tone look, unless your a 1990's Calais owner! LOL

Guess people have diffrerent tastes, plenty of cars over the years have had the two tone paint treatment, gen two Verada XI's all had it and the old magna elites, plus many other makes and models.

To quote from a 7 year old thread:
"The YD is indeed Sapphire blue but the bottom colour is Pewter as are all Solara TJ's it's paint code is KX"

So in this case the car's main colour is blue, there is only one code on the plate, and the silver bit has code KX. So I guess if yours is not Pewter, its a repaint job. If it is Pewter, then you have a genuine Solara.

EDIT: a simple google search brought this up - you coulda dunnit! lol

Can you re read your post it makes no sense.
If you look at previous posts my colour is Yc which is Island blue.
If it only has one code on my plate, how do i know if its KX for the bottom section? Thats why im asking if other Solara's have two paint codes which no one has answered yet.

As the TJ Solara only came out with the one bottom colour, they didn't bother to put that on the plate, slows production runs down, you know . . . .
My post makes perfect sense.
If you are still confused, read the posts I linked to.

May I ask you a personal question?

Ok well thats what i wanted to know if it was supposed to have two codes to be a solara.
So im still unsure if its only an Advance.
Sure ask away.

What's the obsession all about? Its a Magna, Solara or Advance were just different trim/feature levels Mitsu used in desperation to lift sales.

Theres no obsession. Just want to know what it is. If you had a car that had the sports seats and badges but was only an exec you would want to know wouldnt you.

Npe. I'd be more interested in if the oil or coolant needs changing, that the CV boots are still intact, and if/when the wave spring in the gearbox will let go. But thats just me. lol

Anyhow, any automotive paint shop can tell you what the colour code is, and what the name of the YC colour is. They have books for that. lol

My colour code is Yc - Island Blue if you read any of the previous posts properly.

Solara is to Advance, as Tomarto is to Tomayto.

All the twin tone paints are the same as yours, and no one in their right mind would put the time and effort into making an non solara twin tone, it would be cheaper just to buy one lol

At the end of the day mate, don't stress about it. A solara is just an advance with different wheels, twin tone paint, and was a few grand cheaper at the time. Since you have changed the wheels, and didn't buy it new, those two added features of the car no longer apply. Seeing as you still have the twin tone paint though, I'd go out on a rather sturdy limb and say that it is a solara.

Nice bit of research there Ffeeky!
Well, at least the mirrors and side trim were colour coded. The two tone doesn't do much for me, dates the car too much.

The blue, red and green are nice in the two tone but the white doesn't look good.

Just needs some wood paneling on the outside of the doors now and it will be complete lol

My wife's Solara has only one paint code under the bonnet.

Have a look under the bonnet at the compliance plate for the VIN. it should say 6MMTJ8 and then it will have a letter, if the next letter is an A you have an advance.

For example i have a TF advance so mine is 6MMTF6A................

Whilst you're correct in stating the A means it's an Advance, it doesn't mean it isn't a Solara. The Solara package was an option and appears on the data plate as code AD8.

So if it is a Solara it will have the option code AD8 stamped on the data plate.

In my (biased) opinion this teal green/blue works best with the two-tone.
