Hey Guys,

Noticed there are a few tyre questions here...but I had a specific one...

I went into Kmart tyre and auto today to get my tyres rotated (front to back) after a friend told me my front tyres were 'worn as ****'. The guy in the shop said my back tyres were great condition but my front ones wernt even roadworthy (he is probably right).

Now my questions is, (im a tyre noob), I had Bridgestone Turana ER300's all round and only got 30,000k(shouldnt it be double this?) out of the front ones until now, but i was also really disappointing with them from new as they are really bad in the wet (although I have nothing to compare them with as I got them put on the car when i purchased it second hand). The guy in the shop (after i told him i was unhappy with the Turanas) recommended Bridgestone Adrenalins RE001 or RE002 saying they are sportier, only $20 more a tyre and better in the wet. He said he had the same tyres as me on his new car and noticed they were crap in the wet as well (despite been their biggest seller).

So my question is, has anyone been on the Adrenalins before in their magna? Either RE001 or RE002 and what was their experience like in wet driving? Any other advice? Recommended alternatives? (Car is magna TL with 17" enkeis and has Turana ER300 225/50R17 on them atm)

The Adrenalins are decent, but are a performance tyre - as a guesstimate, I doubt you'd get more than about 35,000km out of them. Performance tyres are made of a softer compound than all-round tyres (such as your ER300) which means they wear quicker.

The RE002s are a brand new tyre released to replace the RE001, so if they're a similar price, go the RE002. I'm pretty sure the RE002s were reviewed in a very recent issue of Motor or Wheels (ie last 2 or 3 months), but I can't recall exactly how they fared.

Kmart Tyre and Auto only sell a small range of tyres afaik, so you might be better off going to a Bob Jane or Jax to see what other tyres you could buy.

I have Adrenalins on my GTV (235/45/17's) and I've done about 90,000 on them (yes, you read that right), with maybe 3-5k left in them. Most of the k's are highway & I don't drive it that hard, but I'm no granny.

In my opinion, they're great all-round tyres - good grip & reasonably quiet. The mileage speaks for itself.

Ive just got 2 on the front, still have pirellis on the back. Haven't got much to compare the grip to but I'm happy with them.

I daresay your lack of millage is to do with lack of rotation. If your rears are great but the fronts are unroadworthy someone has been way too lazy with rotations, which explains sub par millage.

RE001's would be a good choice provided you don't mind the slight premium for the higher quality tyre. If you don't mind me asking what pricing are you looking at for the 225/50R17's RE001's? I only ask because I've got a tyre contact who manages a Bridgestone specialist centre and I'm happy to cross check prices for you if you like to get you a better deal. PM me if you like, or SMS if you've still got my number ;)

Adrenalin RE-001 will do 50,000km as an average.

Good tyres, overpriced.

Better buys can be had. How are you getting RE001 for around the $150 mark?
Because that's what ER300s usually go for.

Good luck with that, i got 50,000 out of my turanza's that OP is replacing and the RE001 are fair bit softer.

Depends how you drive.

The RE-001 on the Mazda have lasted 65,000kms but need to be replaced soon. The RE-001 on the old BA ute we had lived for around 40,000kms without too many problems.

I fitted RE001s in 225/50R17 size to my 380 five months ago and have now done 12,000k on them. Cost $229 each.
Very happy with them so far, good grip in both dry and wet, don't ride too hard, reasonably quiet, and wearing very well.
I expect to get at least 40,000k out of them and I def don't drive like a granny!
The RE001 has now been replaced by the RE002 which going by reviews and reports is even better than the RE001 for the same price.
I don't think you'll go wrong with a set of new RE002s.
But as MattVR-X there are cheaper alternatives such as Kuhmo KU31 and Maxxis MAZ1. Both are good value for money and fairly grippy. The Kumho is a good allrounder, reasonable grip, noise, comfort & wear for the price, the Maxxis is great in the wet but a bit noisy and doesn't wear all that well. I've had both of these on my 380 or previous TE V6 and can recommend both.

I had the RE-001s on my Ralliart. They are a handling / performance tyre where-as the 300s are a cruising/ long life tyre (suposedly). The front shoulders wore out well before the rears and I found the ride rather harsh. I have always been happy with Yokohamas. Had 16inch C-drives on my previous TJ Exec, and now have Yoko Advans on my Ralliart.
Sorry my Yokohamas are not Advans, They are S-drive 225/50/17.
Cheers.

Timmy, the question you need to find out when getting new tyres, if you want ones that will last, is what is the 'treadwear' rating?
It's one thing that people don't often ask when purchasing new tyres, but that is what will tell you how long they will last in typical road use of course. The higher the number the better.
Eg: my Tyres on my XRT are marked as; Treadwear: 420 Traction: AA
Basically, the treadwear rating or treadwear grade describes how long the tire manufacturers expects the tire to last.

Thanks for all the useful help guys!

Yes, i was slack and should of got the tyres rotated (i know now for next time). Got quoted $230 per corner for the RE002 (only need the two) with free fitting etc. Note sure how he got $20 more then the ER300's (unless they sell them overpriced)? Or he was talking about another tyre and i misheard. I'm really after more grip then the ER300's and am happy to pay a little bit more for it (safety first). Ill get quote on the Kuhmo KU31 too!

Thanks!!!

I'll ask the treadwear when i ring up about the re002's.

Hi mate I have 01 on my car and they are great in the wet and should get well over 40,000k so give them a go. Not sure how much as they were on car.

Tyre rotation is important on a front wheel drive. The fronts might go for 40,000 km if you look after them, the rears will do double that. If you rotate them front to rear every 10 to 20 thousand km, you would get about 60,000 km out of the four and wear them all down evenly. I don't like having different tread depths or different makes on the two ends of my car, so rotation to kill them off evenly so they can all be replaced at once is important to me.
