View Full Version : Best location for the MAF

Just posing the question which would be the best location for the Air flow meter in a Boosted application before the turbo's or after the turbo's (between the turbo outlets and the throttle body)? I ask because 1 airflow meter but 2 turbo's so should i make a y pipe before the turbo's with the air filter and maf or do i just run it in the inlet pipe after the intercooler just befor the throttle body the later would be the easiest option but i don't know if its the right option. Thoughts?

Generally, air straight into turbo, into IC, then air flow meter then TB

I've seen them run either way successfully on supercharged setups. Next week i'm converting from draw through to blow through. Doing this to try to fix some idle problems, and run an atmospheric BOV. I can let you know if there is any difference in tunability etc. between the two

As far as I can tell from some reading and ECU reverse engineering, if you're going to use the stock MAF and ECU it is probably better to keep the MAF upstream of the turbo(s) as the MAF calibration tables in the ECU don't seem to cover much beyond normal atmospheric pressure range. The Karman Vortex MAF beloved of Mitsubishi has a non-linear response which changes with pressure and temperature, so the calibration will probably be off under boost. On the other hand, having the intake air temp sensor (in the MAF) downstream of the turbo(s) could be useful for managing timing...

More details on translator and this setup? Factory ecu or aftermarket? (yes, I can see its a GTO too)

It's a piggy-back air/fuel controller that has the ability to use GM air sensor then translate or convert it's signal recognized by factory or after market ecu.

There are several advantages of this product; like BOV can vent to atmosphere w/o ruin your air/fuel mixture, fuel air/fuel adjustment, the use of less restrictive and durable air sensor, wideband monitoring etc.

Even NA cars can benefit with MAF Translator I think.

Seems the guys running Rotrex superchargers have the Maf between the charger and the TB so after the air has been boosted and i don't think they have any dramas so i might give that configuration a go.

I bet that's becasue MAP sensor is used in the setup with piggy back ECU. If you are planning on using your factory ecu (after re flash), you will need MAF before compression happens i.e before supercharger/turbo....

I'm using and emanage so a map sensor is not a drama.

just converted to blow through, had to change the tune slightly, but it works well. MAF seems to read boosted air the same as air being sucked through.
