I've been looking at getting my car insured at some point, so i've been looking at quotes. A couple of the insurance companies have listed my model (TF Executive 1997) as having Remote Central Locking. This had me wondering. My car didn't come with any remotes, but it didn't come with a second key either, so it's not really an indication.

SubZ3r0 in the Magna Chatroom suggested I try flicking the key back and forth between ACC and ON three times and to see if the indicators flashed. Lo and behold, the indicators flashed as expected.

What does this mean, if anything?

If my car doesn't have it, would it be possible to adapt the electronics from a higher spec Magna without too much effort?

Cheers

your factory Mitsubishi remote should be a peanut shape and there pretty cheap too

When your indicators flash like that, it's waiting for an input from the remote. It then programs them both together.

Beware when getting a remote. TH onwards use newer remotes.

I've contacted Mitsubishi with the details. Anyone know of the cheapest source to get one and which one I should look out for? I know what a peanut looks like, but visually can't match it up to the shape of a remote, so...

Thinking it's one of the first two?

For a Tf you will need the one in the middle, you can get them from ebay quite cheap. :)

for the remote with the red / green buttons (on my TW wagon), does anyone know what the little white button does? when I click it sitting inside the car, I hear a very faint click (two actually) but can't see what the white button does. ideas?

also, the remote unlocks only the driver's door with one keypress. any way to reprogram it to open all the doors with just one press?

white button opens the boot in a sedan

If you press and hold the white button once it sets of the car alarm if installed. Some sort of Panic button I read.
Too bad it's not of much use unless your practically standing next to the car, those remotes only work in a tiny proximity to the car unlike others I've come accross.
So I don't really get the point of it :P

Yeah I figured it might be a panic button, but it didn't do anything when I pressed it.. :) I'll check if TiMi's suggestion of boot release works for the wagon, but doubt it; the boot would release with the double keypress anyway, so why a dedicated button ..

Its the boot release, not applicable on a sedan. Panic is holding the lock (red) button (which works with extended range).

I guess it's for safety, so you can unlock just the driver's door to stop a carjacker hopping in the passenger side or rear. Bit of a pain in the arse if you have passengers, but you soon get used to it, and gives a bit of peace of mind when parking in dodgier areas...
