Without going to the trouble of removing the alternator in my car (pain in the butt) is there a way to tell what alternator I have in it?

I have had a good look, it has an external regulator on it, which leads me to believe this is a bosch unit......however it has a huge brown two pin plug plugged into the regulator, instead of bosch's usual two pin black thing.

I pulled a bosch unit out of a wreck which had the black plug, it also had cooling fins just behind the pulley, which mine does not have.

Can anyone shed some light on this? I need to do something soon, the worn bearing inside is a ticking time bomb.

Is it possible to retro-fit to the normal black pinned jobby?

I just looked in my Gregorys, the TR/TS V6 Magna's had 3 different alternators fitted, two bosch and a Mitsubishi, one of the Bosch had internal fan and one had a external fan, sounds like yours is the internal fan type. My Verada has Mitsubishi type, I don't know if you can retro fit the other one to your car, the mounting points maybe different, guess if you have the plug from the wrecked one you could just cut and join the wires, hope all goes well, cheers

if it fits the bosch with the small 2 pin black plug is the best alternator around imo. easy to fix and last forever. brackets should be standard so its only a matter of fitting the new plug. i normally solder them and tape them properly.

Thanks for the info guys, looks like I'll be doing a rewire job on a black plug alternator.....these seem to be in plentiful supply too.
