Doing a very basic speaker-only upgrade for now. What size/dimension aftermarket plug'n'play speakers will fit (front doors & rear parcel shelf) for 3rd gen 2000 TH? Head unit is standard with 6stack CD player under passenger seat. Will 6x9 3way screw direct into parcel shelf? What's a reputable & cheap website you can recommend? Ryda?

6.5" in the front, 6x9" on the parcel shelf.

I'd suggest checking out JB Hifi this Wednesday night, as they're having 30% off car audio (http://www.jbhifi.com.au/ff/).

red val is correct in the sizing, ryda is fine never heard anything bad about them however i am a fan of buying local for 3 reasons. it gives you a chance to actually listen to something before you purchase it and if something is wrong with the items you have purchased a local bought product can be swapped striaght away without the mailing wait / much around you can get from certain business's..and number 3 your supporting local business, something they need during these trying times.

EDIT: you could also have a look at shoppingsecure...you can find them in the sponsers section towards the top of the main forums page

Before upgrading you could look at sound deadening... It makes one hell of a difference!

Do both front doors and rear parcel tray at least and you'll notice a serious difference.

Then at a later stage change the fronts and rears.

unless your actualy putting semi decent speakers in, i wouldnt bother with deadening at most use a door kit for 100.00

Yesh, went to buy a set of Alpine SPG-17CS 6.5" that were $128, the guy had to check the number and they were actually meant to be $187, but as they were marked $128 he took the 30% off that and got em for $90 :woot:
Now how do I go about installing the tweeters? They are quite small, drill a hole in the dash pods for the wire and stick them to that?

The last JB Hifi sale, I picked up a set of Alpine Type R splits... RRP is $350, as was the pricetag in store... but JB's 'updated' price was $300, so I scored them for $210 :D

You can get A pillar pods for tweeters through Mitsu spare parts. They replace the delta panel at the front of the front doors. Some upper-spec models came standard with tweeters there. You can them wedge your aftermarket tweeter in with bluetac, hot glue, or whatever else takes your fancy. The beauty of mounting it up there is that it looks like a factory install.

Yeah, What Red Said...
If you are lucky enough, the tweeters you have may have a screw mount at the back, grab the whole tweeter assembly, if there is no screw, you may silastic/glue them from behind.
Wreckers would be cheaper for the lot.

To remove your triangular panel and have a look behind there, Working from the inside of the car, Pull the top (only) 1-2 cm toward you. Just so it comes 'free' of its lug, and gently lift the thing upwards.
To refit, fit the two bottom plastic keyways in first, while holding the the triangle at an angle, the press the top in.

Cheers, I never thought of that. Where exactly do you run the cable through?

If you a running of the H/Unit, use the existing speaker cable in the door, mount the crossover in the door too.

If you are amping the speakers, run them through the existing door wiring rubber tuby/conduit thingy, it will have to disassembled and done in two hits, and I used canola oil too.

Take a look, this is one job to start in the morning, have a lot of patience and not have anything to do in the afternoon, the first one will take two hours, the next one twenty minutes. lol

If you won't be running an amp, make sure you get speakers with a very high sensitivity rating - greater than 90db/watt.

This means they can play louder with less power.

I'm planning to upgrade the speakers (install mid-range speakers in the dash and possibly the tweeters in the door pods), and this thread is just awesome. Swapping the pioneer headunit from the TS to the TW on saturday, and will try and get the speakers sorted over the chrissie break..

Where can I get the tweeter pods? They look perfect and factory.. and do I have to pull the dash out to put the mid-range in the blanks? What size speakers do I have to get? I'd like to install them myself (but n00b and clueless). Is this being ambitious? :D

cool... Decided to skip the mid-range and just add the tweeters to the pods. Will chase up a set with Mitsu.

A good pair of splits is all you need. Aftermarket 3-way speakers are reserved for the sound quality enthusiasts.

you could just find a set of mid-range dash speakers from a Verada- i've still got my mid's in and they work well with the rest of my setup.. but i'm not 100% on how easy/difficult it'll be to fit them in

I think the tweeters would be easier to wire up, as you only have to pull the door trim off, plonk the cross over somewhere and run it off the door speakers, right? You'd use the tweeters primarily for separation and to get the sound stage higher. Certainly, for a n00b like me, the dash speakers may be too much, so I'll try and get the tweeters sorted and if I feel it's missing the bit in the middle, I can then deal with the dash (with a little experience).

Hi mate sorry to hijack the thread but I am in the middle of installing some focal 165vr splits in my tl magna and I am having the trouble of the tweeters being too big... By the looks of it urs are very similar size. Does the glue on the back of the tweeter damage anything? Also did u have to cut the pod at all to fit the tweeter?

Also would u be able to show me a pick of where u put the crossover and ur wiring behind the door trim? That would be awesome cos I'm having problem after Problem with this install. Also I'm assuming I would need to take the door off to feed wires to the door, can anyone confirm?

Thanks so much in advance
