View Full Version : Headlights on when battery connected, no accessories or "on", engine kicks over.
Hey guys,
Progressing with my loom swaps, yesterday I had done dash, floor, and boot looms but had an issue that when I connected the battery, the headlights and indicators stuck on.
Thinking this was caused by the front loom, I spent today replacing the entire thing with the TJ2 VRX one (matching dash, floor, upper dash looms).
Connected battery, same issue.
Following looms swapped:
- Front Loom (Inc fuse box)
- Dash Main Loom (Complete)
- Climate control retrofitted
- Upper Dash Loom (Cluster gets no signal, no lights)
- Floor Looms (both) Left side modified to remove ABS
- Boot Looms (part of floor looms)
The following looms are still factory
- Engine Loom (factory ECU plugged in)
- Drivers side door (plugged in)
- Passenger side door (unplugged - plug is different)
- Rear doors (plugged in)
The following items are still factory items:
- BEM
- ECU
The following was unplugged during these tests:
- SRS ECU
- Airbag
- Steering wheel (clock spring attached, nothing attached to it)
---
Does anybody have any idea what may be causing this?
I will attempt unplugging the door looms tomorrow.
Is this a side effect of SRS being disconnected? I do not have a TJ SRS ECU available atm.
The interior light still works, all fuses/relays have been replaced, junction box is fully connected, cluster is fully connected, dimmers were plugged in, hazards plugged in, light stalk and washer stalk plugged in. When the car was switched to the "ON" position, the brake lights also came on.

I think you are in unexplored territory.
What are the TJ2 VRX looms going into? What are you trying to achieve?
I had a similar problem fitting a TE/TH(?) towbar to a TJ sedan, the original car had the towbar loom plugged into the boot loom at the drivers side, replicating this on the TJ made the trailer lights act weird, like most of them came on when only one should be, blew a fuse when the hazard lights were turned on. Moving the trailer connection to the passenger tail light made everything work normally.
That info is obviously no use to you - but I get the impression Mitsu changed wiring from year to year, and model to model. If you replaced every loom in your car with the VRX looms, and everything that is plugged into those looms, it might all work. Mix and match components, and leaving things out, just won't work.
But thats just my opinion. Good luck.
TJ2 VRX looms are going into a 00 TH Exec. The BEM pinouts are the same, only difference being pin 37 on the TH is blank, 37 on the TJ is "crash sensor" (TH doesn't have one).
Goal of this operation is to get a digital cluster, climate control, power windows, and cruise control.

To add some further info/clarification to Life's post. As soon as the battery is connected the headlights come on and the LH indicator comes on solid
(ie, not flashing) and the high beam function works.

Yeah. I'm with you now. I would transfer as much of the TJ electronics over, and hope for the best. In theory if EVERY component from the TJ - looms, electrical components - is used in the car, it should work. Not a project I would undertake. Good luck - hope someone can be helpful.
My towbar experience shows me there are differences in the wiring to the rear tail lights in the two models even though the plugs are the same, there are bound to be other differences too.

had this on a kr turned out to be a shorted relay under the dash. check the relays;
Check the plugs, I had the same problem when I changed the loom in the TH to a KJ loom, put 2 plugs in the wrong way (same plugs but different colours) and you get the above problem. look at the plugs that plug into the fuse box and see if they are all the same colour, if 1 is different look for one the same but the same colour as the ones in the fuse box.
I hope this makes sense

so headlights, brakelights and left indicator comes on? have a look at the wiring going in and out of those in the fusebox then i guess

Holyshit, a valid response! Any idea which one it was exactly? Was it in the lower dash loom?
DVS you are a ****ing legend. I think I just found the fault. Will need to confirm this tomorrow but all junction box plugs are suppose to be black. I appear to have the following 2 mixed up (I remember one white plug):
B-74 Connection of front and dash harnesses (White)
B-80 Connection of instrument panel harness and J/B (Black)
Don't feel bad I did the same thing
DVS, I owe you a beer... PM me next time you're in sydney!
:ninja:Glad to be of service, and lucky I made the same mistake:ninja:
Did you find all the other different stuff in your TH? or swap everything? :P
I've found:
- AC ECU needs to be deleted
- Heater box needs modifying
- Plug/element thing on the evap box needs to be swapped out
- Sensor needs to be installed inside evap box
- Pass side rad fan plug was different
- AC compressor plug different
- PS idle up plug different
- Oil light sensor plug moved from starter to front loom
- SRS ECU is different
I changed the engine loom, upper and lower dash loom, and engine bay loom, had no real problems as I got all the looms I needed off MAL so I had no problems only had to mod 1 plug and add wires into another.
I've added into my TH (now my sons) black out dash, climate control, cruise control, spot light switch, earlier I added fast glass, we also fitted TJ boot lid TJ bonnet and KJ front bumper so it doesn't look much like it once did, we did the TJ mod after he pranged it and I had to replace the radiator support panel.
