Hey Guys and Girls,
I'm a new forum member here, that's recently brought my first Mitsubishi in Quite sometime. The first magna that I owned was a TP manual wagon, in which I got my P's in some 12 years ago. This time, I've got a late 03' TL Magna Sedan with a tiptronic Auto box. My little problem is that the fuel gague constantly sits on empty and the orange low fuel light stays on! ;( I've just replaced the instrument cluster with a new one and it still does the same thing. The Car has 173,000 Genuine Km's on it, and has been well maintained though its life.

I've done some looking up and it may be possible that it's a fuel sender unit that sits above the fuel tank. I am lead to believe that it sits just under the back seat?

Just wondering if anyone thinks that it's likely that this is the problem? and how much work is it to install a new one? and what would be the general cost to get one? and where from?

Cheers all!

Try checking the fuel pump/sender unit. Remove the rear seat base & remove the plate from the floor pan. Directly underneath is the fuel tank sender unit which mounts into the fuel tank. Try wiggling the electrical connection plug to the pump or clean the plug/socket with contact cleaner to see if that fixes the problem. If no luck then either try the wreckers, the Mitsfix section of this forum or Ebay/Lancercity. Cost could be anywhere fom $50-150.
If removing the pump/sender unit from the fuel tank beware of static discharge, sparks, naked flames etc as the fuel vapors will readily ignite.

Cheers

Thanks for that Magna Diver,
The info's greatly appreciated! ;). Sounds like excellent advise, so I'll make sure I try that out. If It's not raining to heavily tomorrow arvo, I'll get into it and have a good look at it. I've also just printed off a workshop manual section showing some test info on the sender unit showing resistances and all. I'll check it out with my digital multimeter and see whether it's working as it should.

Cheers mate, and thanks for the info once more!

Can almost guarantee you its the sender unit, they fail all the time. Wont hurt to have a look tho :)

If the sender unit is OK (the float still floats), it could be a short circuit in the electrics going from the sender to the dashboard.

Hey Guys,
I'd gone into my local Mitsubishi Dealer and got a new fuel sender unit at the cost of $123.60. Installed it in about 20 minutes and the Fuel Gague Now Works. Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment, and without your help I'd have probably not got the issue fixed so soon!

Best Of Regards, and keep on hammerin'
Jim!
