Hi all, I was thinking of having the old window tinting on my Verada removed and replaced with darker tint, just wondering has anyone had their old tint removed and replaced? just wondering what the approximate cost might be? cheers

Think from memory i got my one re-tinted for about $250 but all the glass was done at 5% tint and the front screen also had a band put across it and the sunroof tinted as well it's awesome during the day and no one can see me talking on the phone only problem is seeing at night in poorly light area's can be be a bit of a struggle.. If you want to remove at least the side glass tint your self it can easily be done with a few razor blades, window cleaner and a few rags. Try your best to remove the tint in one piece heat can help with it and remove the glue that is on the glass with window cleaner and a razor blade or zero grade steel wool can also help with the back window just let the tinter you know that you removed it so he makes sure you all the glue off before he re-tints it and all will be good. If you wont to go really dark i might suggest 20% on the front side windows and 5% on the all the rear glass with a 5% band on the screen

I got some prices for WA the other day (So prob more than you would have to pay over there as most things are more expensive in WA)
These prices also include removal of rear window tint.
Tint a car- Octane or 20% =$395
TKO- 35% $345, 20% $375
Solace- Formula 1 and Octane $367.50, Midnight express $325.50, Bolle $450

I would also remove the side window tints yourself! Heat gun + razer blade and washing detergent worked perfectly for me! (Make sure you use the heat gun on the outside of the window though, not the side with the tint) Heating up the tint makes it come off MUCH easier and as one peice, rather than leaving loads of glue on the windows. So you heat up the window, use the razer to pick a corner up, then peel the tint off. Then use the washing detergent, wipe it on the window and leave for a few mins, then use the razer and the glue should come off really easily!! Seriously only took my around 30 mins to do 2 of my windows (And that was taking my time, making sure they were perfectly clean!) They charge like $50+ usually to remove tint so its def worth doing yourself to save some money. (You could even spend that saved money on getting an even better tint if you wanted!)
The rear window is a bit harder to do as you have the heating lines and you dont want to scratch/rip them off. Personally I would get the tint people to do it as atleast then if they screw it up, its them that would have to replace your window, not you.

I paid $300 to have old tint removed and 2 layers of new tint applied.
This was on a wagon as well!

However it was from a mobile tint guy and told him I was paying cash.

He used to remove tint with a heat gun, but he found using a steam cleaner was better/easier.
The good thing about getting them to remove it is any stuff ups (like some old glue left on the window under the new tint) are their responsibility to fix free of charge.

Hi Rory, thanks so much for your detail decripition on how to remove the old tint, that information will be very helpfull, thank you so much. The tint on my Verada is scratched in places like the drivers door window plus on a couple of doors its got this tiny rippled pattern in it, makes its enoying to lookout the window if your in the back seat, its not bubbles like you see so many cars getting around with but these tiny ripples, looks like the surface of some matt black painted cars with that rough finish, if that makes sense, anway thanks again for the advice, I might get started today on removing the old tint.

Oh one more question, is there any chance the heat from the heat gun will crack the glass? guess not, but thought I'd ask. cheers

I had the tint on teh rear window of my wife's sedan replaced because the rear window got smashed. I was quoted $130 in Canberra, but was visiting in Tamworth and got it done really well there for $77. Excellent job.

Sounds good, I'd like mine as dark as possible, but here in NSW the darkest you can go is 35%, not sure what happens if you go darker, a fine or a defect notcie maybe, anyone have any thoughts on darker then legal tinting? cheers

if you go darker then 35% in either QLD or NSW it is illegal and can attain you a defect notice to clear. I have had no problems yet with the law if you don't do stoopid things they never really look at you but my car is also registered in QLD so i don't have to worry bout the 12 month pink slip on it

I'm sure you could get away with 20%, I have 35% atm and will be going to 20% when I replace all glass, I've had a cop try and fine me for having my tint to dark cause he couldnt see my p plate, this was on a dead black road with no lights around, good thing I went to p 2's the next day

lol yeah i remember when i had my Honda years ago and was caught driving along the beach front on surfers paradise with no head lights the copper didn't like my sound system so he fined me and then defected my car mainly for the windows and wooden steering wheel i had on it. I got a inspection done at QLD Transport and they didn't say any thing about it

Ok cool, I will go for 20% tint and see what the tinting place says, I want it reasponably dark or theres no point having it, the tint on my car at the moment isn't very dark, the car is a dark blue colour so I think it would look good with dark tint. Thanks for your reply
cheers

i need to get new tint on my VRX ..the rear screen is blurry and i can't see out the back, and its not dark enough either, also the driver side tint is dodgy like a layer is coming off, ive tried cleaning it..its like there is overspray on the inside of the window..annoying..its bout $300 to remove and install new tint...id go 15-20% on sides and 5% on rear, i found that worked well on my old commodore...never got in trouble for it either.

Hi Mate, let us know how you go with it, because I have TJ and it has no tint at all on it, not cool... so I would like to get some dark tints on it, but still legal I guess... would look pretty nice on a white car too... and since I'm in Sydney, I thought if you get a good price for yours somewhere, I might go there too... thanks :)

Hi mate, thanks for your reply. I'm in Bathurst so you may get a better quote then I got today. I only went to one place, he quoted me $360 to tint the car and $60-$80 to remove the old tint, he said if I wanted to I could remove it myself at his workshop to save myself money, he showed me a black tint thats 35% and it looks dark enough, he said he wont do it darker then that or he can be fined $10,000 and I can be fined $5,000, I thought he's quote was not bad so I didn't bother going anywhere else and have booked in to be done this Friday. My first Magna was a TM 1986 model, it was white with quiet dark tinted windows, looked good, so I'm sure your white TJ would look great with dark tinted windows. Let me know what you get quoted to tint your car as I'm interested to know the differences in price, all the best

My wife's car is a white TF sedan. It looks really good with the dark tint. The Tamworth guy had 2 shades and used the darker one. I am not sure how dark it is, but he said that he used it all the time and had no complaints. I only had the rear window done (to match the other windows).

Thanks mate, no worries. $360 seems a little steep, but the last time I had my windows tinted it was for my Commodore about 5 years ago, so prices must have gone up since then. But for a good job, thats a good price.

Thanks, I will check out a few places here in Sydney and see what I can find. I my Magna doesn't have any tint on it at all, so I won't have any removal costs which is a good thing. Lol! Will keep you update and hope you car comes out looking awesome :)

Cost me $70 to have the tinting removed off my old Volvo before it would pass roadworthy......the guy said he would have dropped that price to 40 if I was having new tint put on but it was a Volvo so it was like ......meh

quick easy removal of tint!!

you need:

windex, black garbage bags (large enuff for the window/s in question), paper towels, and a razor blade

This is so easy its not funny, i've done this myself.

1. cut the bag to fit the tinted area
2. spary heaps of Windex to the tint, (on the inside of window), and put the garbage bag onto the sprayed tint
3. turn on your heater Full and leave the car in the sun, running for 20mins - 1hr depending what the outside temp is. (If you live in a cool climate or there is a lack of sun, it can be a problem, but if u stick a black garbage bag on the outside of the window as well.
4. check to see if the corner of the tint is to able to be lifted using the razor blade, if it peals off, then grab the garbage bag and tint at the same time, then peel both off together!!
5. clean window with the windex and paper towel!!

Works on rear windows without harming the defroster!! (If doing it on the rear window put the rear demister on as well)

I've done it, it works great, is cheap and easy!!!!

Hi mate, those prices sounds pretty good, maybe I should have shopped around abit instead of just going with the first quote, oh well, I have the car booked in tomorrow, just hope I'm happy with how it will look, and I hope the old guy doesn't take too long to remove the old tint but he said $80 max to remove the old tint, so all up I might be looking at $440 at the most, hopefully less.

Had the tinting done today, looks ok at the moment, its suppose to look its best in 4 weeks time when all the glue and water and imperfections dissapear, well so the old guy says. he told me he had a lot of trouble removing the old tint and i'm sure he did but he said to me he got the shits with it and didn't care if he removed all the old glue or not, wow I can pick'em, he said if I wasn't happy in a month to come back and I'm sure I will if its not close to perfect as it cost me $420 all up
