got my wheel bearings replaced today and the bloke said that the (front right) axel stud is flogged out, causing even new bearins to have play. by axel stud i assume he means the part that the bearing pressed onto. i cant feel any play at all though.

questions: if i cant feel any play, does it need to be replaced? and what will be the cost?

cheers

I think his stud is logged out by the sounds of it

The bearings are pressed in and then the drive shaft is tightened properly and wheel bearings are preloaded

You would need the wheel off the ground to feel loose bearings

Axel stud? No such thing - the wheel bearing outer race sits in the hub, the inner race sits on the drive shaft. If the "axel stud" is the bit that sticks out with a huge nut on it, and it is "flogged out" (whatever that means) its just a matter of replacing the CV shaft or outer joint on that side with a new one. I would go back and ask what he meant when he said the "axel stud" is "flogged out" in plain English - get him to point out which bits he is on about. lol

right, well, the wheel is about to fall off right now.

He put a brand new bearing into it and its about to fall off. So what you are saying is all that i need is to replace the outer cv and its all sweet? thats all?

changes the entire cv shaft (needed to anyway) and its just as bad. so: is it correct that the only 2 parts that affect the bearing is the outer cv housing, and the part of the hub that its pressed into, noting else?. also im pretty sure that the bearing isnt new, due to it being stained and dirty.

allright, i know i am not meant to post so many in a row but i really need to know this soon.

When i took the cv shaft out, i looked through from the back of the hub into where the bearing goes. If the bearing was replaced that day, would that part have been clean and new, or is that a part that you dont replace? I have never had anything to do with wheel bearings before.

Also, doest the bearing press in from the from or the rear of the hub.

thanks.

yeah from behind the hub. the bearing has a circlip as well as being pressed in. if the bearing has play in it, that could mean you need a new hub. i was told by a mechanic when i replaced my bearings myself that, its possible that the hubs may have been damaged and not giving a tight fit.
however that was not the case for me.

so if there was a new bearing in there, it would look new and clean from the cv side of the hub? because its all ol and rusty and untouched.

A photograph or two would be helpful. . . . .

If the bearings dirty thats understandable, under engines is often greasy and dirty, but rust seems a bit weird...
pics?

alright, so the bearing collapsed on saturday, so i took it back in today, and they put another new bearing in with a new hub center. (the part with the wheel studs on it, this is what he meant by axel stud) and it was perfect for about 20kms, then the gringding noise came back. so i lifted the car up again and its got a fair bit of play in the wheel again. also, when i wobble the wheel, i can see the cv shaft wobbling with it. if that helps at all. also sorry, no pics were taken when i changed the cv.

could it be simply that he didnt tighten the cv shaft nut enough? i dont have a 32mm socket so i cant check. souns to me like when the other new bearing collapsed, it has flogged out the outer hub.

Take the wheel off, and check to see if the Split pin has been put on to stop the Shaft nut from coming loose, also make sure the wheel nuts are tight also.
Who did the bearing change for you?

Take the car to someone who knows what they are doing and get it fixed.
