View Full Version : Spiked tyres.

Some local low life went and spiked a few tyres on my daughter's cars the other night. They used some sharp pointy object to pierce the sidewalls. Two Magna tyres, two 4 wheel drive tyres and 2 commodore tyres. I hope they are proud of their ability to destroy things.:woot:
Anyhow, the holes are small - I can pump them up to 20 psi before the leak and the pump balance out.
Question is, are sidewall punctures repairable? One place I took one tyre to said no way, the steel belts in the side walls will wreck any repair. (WTF?) Another place said he would try but not promise anything. Anyone know of the best repair method, if its possible at all? The 4 wheel drive tyres are my main concern, as they are expensive. And if the little tyre haters come back . . . .
Any damage to sidewall or within 20mm from the edge of the tyre face is instant ruined ryre, should not be fixed in any circumstance

Mmmm. Looks like I'm out of pocket about $1K for new tyres. Dave, are you employed in a tyre place by any chance? (I vaguely remember you are) If not, I'd like more opinions from others who have been "spiked".

I used to repair & replace tyres at the dealership I was working at (in addition to being a mechanic) and I can confirm that Dave's information is 100% correct.

No use for tubes these days mate with tubeless tyres - and the patch is only to be used on the tread and never on the shoulders of the tyre or sidewall. The moment there's damaged to the sidewall, the structural integrity of the tyre under load from air pressure and weight put on it is severely compromised.

I just had a dammed flat with a low profile tyre and because the car sat on the rim overnight (as it deflated once we got home and while sleeping) Bob Jane said the side wall was rooted and needed a new tyre! Even flats are costly!

Mmmm. Out of pocket, I am!
In the good old days a porous rim or damaged tread simply meant a tube was put in. I guess sidewalls are a different story.
I wonder if I can make a claim on the "victims of crime" fund? lol
You know, the fund we all contribute to when we get a speeding ticket or get caught drink-driving!
No?
Thought not. *sigh*

None at all. If they come back and slash the new tyres I will just fill them with concrete - that would slow them down. lol

Yep, damaged sidewall = dead tyre.
If the slashing happens again, feel free to get some cheap tyres and pump them to 60psi next time.
The persons responsible will have good fun.

Fill the tires with concrete, or fill the people doing it with concrete?
If it has a steel belted sidewall, and occours regularly, I wonder if theres a way to electrify the steel belt?
I have a set of spare magna steel rims with a little tread left if you want to borrow them for a while.

Whichever I can get my hands on first.

Probably illegal to electrocute people, even in the act of vandalism. lol

Actually, the Magna that got spiked is a TS and I have a TJ. I just happen to have a spare set of steel wheels for the TJ - same size as the TS - so that's not a problem, its the 4 wheel drive tyres that are expensive. But thanks for the offer.

What are they gonna do?
Go to the cops and tell them you electrocuted them (with no proof but their word) while they were trespassing and vandalizing your property with an illegal and possibly deadly weapon (99% of the time it's a knife), and they then assaulted you?
You can fill tyres with Sulfur dichloride and Ethylene and nobody would know anything.
Just saying.
