View Full Version : Timig of Timing belt/spark plug changes

I noticed in the manual it states that the Timing Belt and Spark plugs should be changed at 100k rather than the 105k service.

Is this really correct or can we just do them at 105k?

Has anybody got the spark plugs cheaper overseas?

Anybody recommend someone in Canberra who is good at doing the belts on these cars?

I figure it's belt and plugs at the same time, seeing as how much has to be done to access either.

I have bought my last few sets of plugs OS and had no problems with them. I wouldn't be too worried about 5 k difference. Just get the plugs done at the same time as the belt if you are not into doing them yourself. I did the last set myself. I bit time consuming and a little fiddly but not rocket surgery.

Agreed.

Shop around on eBay for good plugs at a fraction of the price you pay from a dealer or a local store. I'm talking NGK Iridiums at less than $8 each. And it's not hard changing all six yourself. The front three are child's play and with the back three it's not that hard to remove & replace the intake plenum. Just study how it all goes together and remember where each nut & bolt & tube came from. You don't even need the workshop manual (but it helps). Just be careful not to overtorque the seven plenum bolts (says he who has been there done that!)

Better than paying a dealer a packet for something you can do yourself at a fraction of the cost.

But changing the timing belt is a whole different ball game, better to get an expert to do it if you're not handy with the tools & confident you can do it right.

I got the Bosch Flux capacitors put in @ 90k and timing belt done @ 105k

I brought them from the US before we had a strong dollar and I think it cost me $78 landed to my door

Oh I won't be attempting any of this myself, not my forte at all. So warranty is ok to wait till 105k? It was brought to my attention at the 90k service that these are due at 100k, not the next service.

Is there a part number for the Platinums from Bosch? Seems they aren't sold here and not sure which Galant model to choose.

Anybody had experience with the timing belt in Canberra, as in a good workshop that knows what they are doing? I might buy the kit and get someone good to fit rather than the dealer.

Mate,

Check out this thread:New spark plugs (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79390&highlight=spark+plugs)

Then check out eBay Motors (US) for NGK BKR6EGP (platinums) or NGK BKR6EIX11 (iridiums).

Or go one heat range 'hotter' and check out NGK BKR5EGP or NGK BKR5EIX11. OK for a stock 6G75, but go the 6s if you've done some mods.

The EIX11 iridiums are about twice the price of the EGP platinums.

I've been running the NGK BKR6EGPs for 15 months & 35,000k now without a problem, checked them out a couple of weeks ago and they still look good.

NGK are as good as if not better than the Bosch, no need to splash out extra on Bosch plugs.

Edit - looks like Mecha beat me with the link, for the millionth time I gotta learn to type faster!

NGK most definitely are, in my opinion, the dux nuts of spark plugs. I would never put Bosch in any vehicle.

I love my Bosch IR fusions but each to their own

Fair enough Mecha :)
My bad Bosch spark plug experience was quite a few (ie 8-10) years ago, and definitely was not with platinum or iridium plugs, so I probably need to stop basing all my thoughts on that one bad experience and be more open minded!
I'm thinking of putting some NGK Iridiums in the front bank and seeing how they go. If I'm happy with them, and I have half a day to take the intake off, I'll then look at doing the rear bank.

In terms of putting in a 5 or 6 plug, I'm sticking with a five. A few intake and exhaust mods don't warrant changing the temperature rating of a plug.
I would only consider going to the next temperature rating if the mods were serious, like forced induction type serious.
Having a plug which is too cold can lead to it's own problems.

I do love Bosch products in general. I currently have NKG's in the Falcon.

Yep, they look good for a stock 6G75.

Better get 'em quick before the Oz$ plummets!

Bought them! Now to sort out the timing belt kit/install.
