My new double-DIN fascia arrived in the mail today.
It's made of black ABS plastic (unpainted)
Just wondering what the best procedure to paint it is, and if anyone can suggest good paint brands/types to use?
Not sure yet if I want to try to match it to the silver on the existing fascia, or just go a semi-gloss black.
The deck going in is an Orion AVR6.1 which is black.
Cheers :)

I seem to recall panel beaters/paint shops use some special primer when they paing replacement ABS bumpers to make sure the paint bonds properly to the plastic?

Contact JesseJames, he is about the best painter here on AMC and prob one of the best you will find anywhere. He has done many of these sorts of things and his eye for detail is fantastic

google:
1. Wash the part with warm soapy water very thoroughly.
2. Clean the plastic with a plastic cleaner. It must be a cleaner made for plastic. Wax and grease removers will not work correctly. The wrong cleaner and it might not stick.
3 Check to see if all the mold release has been removed. Rub the plastic with your finger and if it is squeaky clean then it is good. If it still feels slick repeat steps 1 and 2.
4. Next scuff the plastic with a fine scuff pad. 3m has a grey pad that works well. If you need to sand anything, wetsand with 320 grit sand paper.
5. Now clean the plastic with the plastic cleaner again to get ready for paint.
6. Once you have it all set up for paint, apply two coats of a plastic adhesive promoter with 5 min flash between coats and 20 minutes before sealer.
7. Spray on your sealer with a flex additive in it, and let it flash

and +1 for JesseJames, he has painted a couple of peoples consoles and they look really good.

if you want the matching silver , a brand new facia from mitsubishi cost about 50 bucks..
exact match and no hassle...

Thanks. The fascia I have purchased has a textured surface however, so I don't think sanding it will be an option. Might leave it as the bare plastic for now, and look at doing something to it a bit later on, or even just getting a new fascia straight from Mitsubishi as per BradGT's post below. If I had realised that it was available as a spare part already painted I wouldn't have bothered getting an aftermarket one in from the USA :(

Meh so I decided repainting was too much effort so I have ordered a fascia from Elizabeth Mitsubishi - about $70 and it's already dark silver so will match the existing decor.
Does anyone want a black fascia? Will sell fairly cheap LOL

Do you have the details of the part number - seems that there are two fascia panels - one for around $55 and the other around $85. Anyone know what the difference is between the parts?

Thanks

one probably like the GT one , with all the buttons on the front , and the other with a massive hole for a double-din headunit from the base model vehicles.

Spot on, its exactly that, just with a 5" GPS attached from behind. I pulled the smaller upper console clock with surround out.

Back on topic.

I'll second that. Here's the centre stack and facia he painted for another member. The dash inserts have been customised as well, i'd imagine there will be installed photos as soon as i drop the facia to him.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
that's nice.
Definitely a class above mine.

Mines semi gloss btw. And with not being up high, there is no reflection \ glare. IMO, looks good against my glossy head unit.

It is an awesome looking paint job with a custom colour, the only thing i know is that it has a yellow pearl in it.
Thought i'd add another picture, this is one of the dash inserts that is going into the same car.
Not the best quality photo but will show why the facia and centre stack surround were painted that colour.

There are two things that would suggest to me that Jesse is a real pro,
1. His work looks top notch......
2. His hands are completely free of paint. (If they are his)

Top marks Jesse

Lovely work!

It would be good if the hazard switch and the top screen surround could match. But I understand it is a reflection issue. Apparently this is why we never got 3rd gen woodgrain airvent surrounds.

True, there is black paint specs on the top of the screen behind the mirror to reduce glare from the dash, I think the top screen surround would cause glare issues as it's alot closer the centre/bottom of the screen

Thanks for comments boys and yes, my hands are always clean and never covered in paint like most painters as clean hands deliver clean work.

Can anyone give me the part number for the silver GPS facia, or a VIN of a car that came with one because my local dealer ordered me a standard one, then tells me they dont understand what i want, nor can they order one in. Apparently i need a VIN and they order it from that and no-one knows what it looks like until it turns up

I just asked for a stereo surround from an ES, and I got what I needed. They are always confused by these requests it seems, took a little talking to get mine ordered.

cheers for the advice. Your correct, the ES models seem to have the same surround as the GPS optioned cars, thanks !!

Hmmm looks good, I think it needs to be a few shades darker though and maybe some glossy clear coat.

Yeah, you're right about the shade, although I think matte is better than gloss for a dash. I have some darker paint, I'll try that next weekend.

Are we still able to order the genuine ES style double din surrounds?

Should be, I got mine a couple of months ago, just ring a dealer.

mitsubishi order parts by VIN number.

so go on carsales, and use a VIN number from any ES with the surround your looking for to order the part
