just got my new car home.. vr-x. and it sounds like it has snapped a con-rod, piston or thrown a bearing.. was kind of hoping it was seized as the previous owner said it wouldn't turn over (that was the battery) but now instead of replacing motor it looks like a better idea to repair this one.. it starts, has a miss and a snapping/clunking sound internally and idel is kind of up higher then normal but then back down up n down (not tps) its slower then a dodgy tps.. any advice would be great. its off to a mechanic tomorrrow but what type of costs should i brace for?
thanks in advance

Cost depends on what is wrong with it. So really until a mechanic - or you - look at the engine seriously, no one knows what the repair cost will be. Life is like that sometimes.

If it is estimated by the mechanic to cost more than about $700, it will probably be cheaper to get a low mileage engine from a wrecker.

If the "snapping/clunking" sound is there while the engine is running its probably something internal. But, if it stops once the engine has started it could be something else. Point is, not every noise means you've got to pull your engine down. Start simple.

Have a look around the AC and PS belts, check your starter and solenoid, check for a broken engine mount, check nothing has fallen down into the timing belt or the timing belt cover isnt loose or snagged on the belt - just a couple I can think of. Easy to spot and you don't have to get your hands too dirty to find them.

If it were a big end bearing you would know about it, the rattle/knock is always there. A little end bearing rattle more after you rev it. Piston slap and little end bearing sound roughly the same, but they rattle more at certain rev's compared to each other. Never spun a main bearing, or worked on anything with a spun main to know what that sounds like. If anything in your valve train is broken there would be a whole lot of other symptoms.

Honestly, the cost of repairing the engine will far exceed whatever a second hand one will cost. I recently sold one out of a VR-X for $450 with 68,000km on it and the timing belt done within the past 2000km. Just replace the engine.
