hi
i need to replace both tie rods and rack gaiters on the steering rack of my th wagon, my question is can u unbolt the rack and slide it out from the side , or do you have to remove all the crap that the workshop manual says to do ?? :hmm:
thanks in advance martin

No you can't get the rack out without dropping the alloy suspension frame that it and the control arms bolt to. i have just replaced my steering rack so i know first hand.

If you are removing the tierod to replace the tierod end plus the rack gaiter/boot, then you should not need to remove the rack....or are you planning on replacing the rackends which screw into the end of the rack?.

You can remove the eack without touching the k frame and if doing rack ends is avrack out job but if only doing rack boots and tie rids can be done with rack still installed

hi the tie rod ENDS are ok...... i need to change the TIE RODS ( THE ROD BETWEEN THE TRACK ROD END AND THE STEERING RACK, BOTH SIDES ) BUT LOOKS LIKE ACCESS LOOKS A BIT TIGHT WITHOUT REMOVING THE WHOLE STEERING RACK....
thats why i wondered if you could remove the whole rack from either side of the car, without the need of dropping the the frame and lower arms ?????
thanks..

I'd guess what you are calling "tie rods" are more generally called "rack ends", so in that case the rack must be removed. Madmagna suggests an easier method. I'd try a search as I've seen the method of 'easy' rack removal mentioned recently. Good Luck.

EDIT....did a quick search and found detailed removal instructions here: http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78000&page=2&highlight=rack+removal
