so i was minding my own business driving down the princess freeway to see magnaman89 today and could smell a burning smell. thought it was the tape deck but something caught my attention in the rear view mirror so i looked back to see lots of smoke and some small flames. anyway by the time i pulled up and got to the back of the car the flames had reached the roof lining and the car filled with smoke. lucky i had water in the back (as we know its vital when you own a magna) so i put it out. but its scary how flammable the plastic is. it was only ten seconds max and it spreed like wildfire

anyway i got new interior bits and have a had new speakers for a long while, just been too lazy to install them. so i learnt 2 things. 1.always carry water in the car. 2.dont be lazy and replace you speaker before they burn the car to the ground.

Wow, wicked speakers man ;) I carry a dry chem extinguisher nowadays for the same reason as explained below. I don't think water would have helped me.

I know how fast these electric fires spread, I had an XY GS falcon years ago and the steering wheel shorted at the stoplights. I run the red, around the corner and into a park real fast, right in front of two police cars who followed me in LOL. I pulled the battery leads and tore off the center of the steering wheel and smothered the fire with damp towels, by the time they got out of their cars. When they saw what was what, they did not write me up, but said I probably saved a major traffic congestion and gave me a free pass sort of to get the car home to be repaired properly. Bloody Ford and those rim style horns!!

That why most Mitsubishi switch negative as it safer to do so :) I wonder why the speaker caught fire :S

ide say the speaker just got hot and the cone jammed and stooped moving back and forth. when that happens they get very hot very fast because the coil of wire basically turns into an element lol. but god it was scary seeing flames in the rear view mirror all of a sudden. doug will tell you i was still shaking half an hour later when i arrived at his place!

but might be an idea for anyone left with original speakers to replace them because there was no real reason for it but it still happened. one of those situations that you later realize could have been a hell of allot worse! i just thank my lucky stars i carry water on long trips lol. funny that no one stoped or alerted me to it. must be because everyone hates magnas soo much lol
