Was just wondering if this sounds right? I was thinking of buying a 2003 TJ2 Magna soo however, the lady took it in for a roadworthy..... Heres the results

- Needs new engine mounts (how much roughly)
- Needs new tappet covers (how much roughly? are they easy to DIY)
- Needs new brake pads ($30)
- Needs 2 tyres (Understandable)

how much do you guys reckon to get the parts and can the covers be done at home. engine mounts ill take into mechanic and brakes and tyres ive done before.. Help was real keen on this car until now :(

Those bits that need fixing are not unusual for an 8 year old car of any make. They are all DIY jobs if you are mechanically minded.
If you are thinking of buying this car, these points are a good bargaining point to lower the price.

There will be other things that need doing to the car, but you will find out what they are as you go along. lol

Who quoted you 1.6k to fix?!

Front and rear engine mounts will be 180 for the pair, driver's side mount will be like 150.

No idea on tappet covers, tyres no more than 150 a side (Kumho KU31) depending on your needs.

Sounds very pricey. I'll start off saying straight away to get a 2nd opinion. Tyres you should be able to get Bridgestone RE92's for no more than $100 ea fitted (assuming the wheels are stardard size)
I'd be surprised if the tappet covers needed replacing rather than just the tappet cover gaskets.. the gaskets themselves are relatively cheap, under $50. Even if the tappet covers needed replacing, the wreckers would probably have them cheaper.
Replacing engine mounts is a bigger job but I couldn't justify the costs for just the above items, no way.
I had a rather major service done on my old 1998 TF 3 years ago: New Timing belt & cam seal, replaced water pump, 1x engine mount, front tappet cover gasket replaced, auto transmission service & flush, cooling system flush & refill, brake fluid flush, power steer flush, engine oil & filter plus the checkovers (and these are only the items that I can remember off the top of my head) for $1400 and Mitsubishi was only $80 dearer than that.

yeah i thought this was abit over priced. shes a friend of mine and was kindly going to sell me the car for $1500 down from her original price of $2000 no roady or rego. But yes this came up haha soooooooooo what to do? Buy it and fix it or leave it and move on?

$1500 for a TJ2 in good condition besides those points just listed is a damn good price, i'd say buy it!!

Even with that amount of K's (only just above average) its still a great buy and those things that need to be fixed are all only minor jobs.

Where are you? Give me $1000 and I'd be happy to do the job (minus the tyres.) I sure all the bits would be well under $500 at Repco (and in stock.) I'm more than happy to work for $150+ an hour :)
I live in Brisbane.... $1600 seems like a lot of money. Maybe in Sydney things cost more?

Recently did similar items to my TW for a RW

Drivers engine mount replaced
Rear cover gasket + plug seals
2 x RW 2nd hand wheels + tyres

total $370

The LH engine/transmission mount was flagged to be replaced, a further inspection showed nothing wrong with it... a wipe and a silicon spray was all that was needed.

+ $50 for pads and 20 mins, there's your RW

At the price you're paying, buy it!

High kms aren't much of an issue with these cars.

yeah im really keen for it aye. the other problem is though getting the money for the rego hahaha. gonna be a damage of $800 :S for 6 months as i gotta renew and put it under my name (does this sound about right?) reason i ask as this is my first car and im just getting more opinions :D and yes the km/s i dnt really mind my brother in law has a 1999 TH sports manual with 290,000 + still running, never had a service for 2-3years leaks oil, you need to know the trick ;) to get in reverse hahaha but easily smoked my brothers 183 HSV hahah

dont use your brother in laws car as a reference point for buying your car, if he has'nt serviced his car for 2-3 years and its still running, good luck to him, no normal person in their right mind would do that to their car.
rego will cost $250-300, green slip will cost $650-700 and thats for 12 months.

I was talking about how good these cars run mate. not a reference ^^ and for the cost of the rego's you have given me i think its a tad different with queensland ( i dunno just running of this transport website) ....dont know if link will work https://www.service.transport.qld.gov.au/eQuote/eQuoteResults.jsp

but this is the quote for renewal of rego 12months

can anyone help me find these parts for cheap? really keen on this car

HOOKUPOZ

- new engine mounts - $80-$140 try ebay, wreckers, repco
- Needs new tappet covers - not sure what these are but I assume your talking about rocker cover gaskets - $30-$50 each. again repco or genuine or mitsfix
- Needs new brake pads - $40-$120 an end repco supercrap etc
- Needs 2 tyres - $80-$250 depending on size/quality etc ebay, tyre shop

Cars are not cheap mate and these are just normal replacement parts that all cars go through, like I said before you are getting a pretty good deal.

Hope this helps Luke

Dont worry i was thinking the same thing lol, initially i though he was talking about rocker covers wondering why on earth they needed replacing.

I think 1600 is a bit steep, but then again it could have been an absolute maximum quote. It would realistically be about 1400, if original mitsubishi parts are used. The driver side and rear roll stop genuine mount itself cost about $350 combined. Brake pads are very long lasting and hence cost about $130. Tappet covers, no idea. he better be giving you Pirelly P zeros for this price... haha.

Otherwise, this is a great buy. just make sure t-belt and water pump has been changed on time.

Dude... what the quote is saying (without saying it of course) is; $800 for the parts & $800 for the labor. lol
Get a second or third quote from somewhere else cause that's utter BS

Being a 2000 TH it possibly has the 3.5, badges don't mean anything. The 5 speed 3.0L still goes really well though.

Simple solution for the engine size, check the engine number

Very likely is a 3lt btw. Mine is a TH exec and was originally a 3lt. It will be on your rego papers, no badges on the guards, and it will be a little more "rev happy".

It's another name for an extra tax....more palatable if it sounds warm and fuzzy.
