View Full Version : Misfiring 3.5L
Hey guys,
After any suggestions on why my TH keeps misfiring. Been to the mechanics already twice this week. Replaced plugs, distributor cap, high tension leads, injector cleaner in fuel, fuel octane boost put in. Had the timing belt, water pump etc done all at the same time. It was misfiring before it went into the mechanic. About the only thing not done is reset the computer.
Running out of ideas on what may be causing the problem.
Thanks for any assistance

The only way to rule out injectors it to pull them out and get them tested. Does it miss fire higher in the rev range? If it is running well lower in the revs but breaking down higher in the revs it could be the injectors. You could reset the computer by pulling the fuse. Don't think this is it though. On my TL Magna in the fuse box under the bonnet there is a fuse surrounded by yellow plastic. Pull that fuse, then put it back after a minute or two. The car will probably drive really badly for some time - stalling ect, but then it will relearn and return to how it was. Does it miss when there is a full tank of fuel? If it only misses on half a tank you could have a lizard in the swirl pot. (In the fuel tank) That is probably the last thing I would check though.
It would be great if you could describe the miss a little more - when it happens... ect.
First thing I'd do is check the compression on each cylinder - a burnt valve or one that's not sealing properly will cause your problem. Could also be the coil inside the distributor but I'd do the compression check first.

Yeah I've been thinking about it, and the compression might be low in one of the cylinders,... As most of us know you need fuel, compression and ignition to get a engine working right... Try this first because is easy to test... Thought your guy should of checked this...already?
thanks guys,
It is misfiring badly when put under a load (accelerating from lights etc). It has just begun misfiring so badly that it is almost undriveable at the moment. Seems to run OK when revving highly. Will be going to visit the mech again to see what solution he will come up with this time

Even though they are new, I would check the plug leads for correct resistance and perhaps the plugs for condition - plugs will tell you a lot about the condition of the engine. Other than that, it may be a failing power transistor/ignition coil.
There is a crowd in adelaide that can put a distributor on a test rig and test if its failing under load.

mine did that but it also lost power. i checked the distributor cap and it looked fine/ it was teh internals that had corroded so it wouldnt work properly. swapped it and didnt have another problem and the car was driven heaps for nearly a year after that. that might be your problem and ti was only wile accelerating or heavy load up hill. carefull slow driving had it run normal but just a little too much accelerator and it misfired and lost power.
Was with the mechanic this morning. Did the compression test on all cylinders. All good. Checked each plug as well. All good. Thought it may have been a vacuum hose but they were all connected and no leaks. Checked the throttle body wax bead thing and that was also good. Has a brand new distributor cap and leads. Currently looking at the distributor to see if that's the problem. Ran the little portable computer thing over it as well and it wasn't showing any problems or abnormalities either. It only misfires really badly when hot. When it is cold in the morning runs perfectly until the temp gauge hits normal running temp. Then the misfiring really kicks in.
I reckon an air leak when the engine is hot, something expanding that isnt apparent when cold. Either that or an electrical gremlin

On many cars, this usually indicates a bad CAS (crank angle sensor)....
Thanks for the responses guys. Will let you know tomorrow what we found out. The mechanic reckons he has it nailed. Should be interesting. Third time lucky...... He has been pretty good about it too.

sounds like when i had stuffed ignition coil
Lowrider gets the prize on this one. It was a stuffed ignition coil. Was cracked on the bottom side where it couldn't be seen. Had to remove the ignition coil to find it. The mech was doing a check everything in the ignition system when he found it. Not real common apparently.
Thanks for the assistance everyone. Passed on all your ideas as we tried to fault find the wagon.

So its all fine now? I take it that it is.
The wagon is running the way it is supposed to now. Idle was rough yesterday but it has settled down now.

Hey Yoda - Good to hear your car is running good again. How many K's have you done?
