hi all,
i scored a set of 14" tp mags for the wagon with new, quality tires for $100.
problem is the wheel nuts all work them selves lose unless you tighten them really tight. as in i use a wrench that's 2 feet long. im scared ill shear the studs at this rate! the nuts are what i believe to be original and standard to first / 2nd gen alloys.
whats the solution?
thanks allot,
regards jay

I picked up some nuts from a wreckers that had a lot of surface rust, I cleaned em up really well, but I over lubricated them, and they kept loosening themselves off.
If the threads are oily or greasy, wipe em off or degrease them a little. Oil/Grease in the nuts had to be degreased, I didnt have any degreaser, I washed en in the sink with kettle HOT water and detergent, dry quicky!

ill try cleaning up the threads because especially the back has grease form wheel bearing job but i thing they were bad even before that.
if it comes to it ill lock tite them but they are on and off soo often it would be pretty inefficient. do you need to do them each time or after once does it make them sticky enough. ive used teflon tape before but dont want to do that on my car lol
thanks

You probably have the incorrect wheel nuts for Mag wheels.
You are getting a big message that something is not quite correct.
You only need around 75 foot pounds of torque. Basically the wheel wrench supplied with the car and a firm shove on the end to do the final tighten.
Look at the shape of the wheel in the bottom of the wheel nut holes of your mag wheels.
Are the bottom of the holes tapered or are they flat. In many cases the specific nuts for steel wheels are different to those used with mag wheels.

I'd second what spud100 says - had this trouble on a trailer that had one mag and one steel wheel - nuts were tapered both sides and the mag one kept coming loose - fixed this by reversing the nuts so the taper was away from the rim and the flat side against the rim.....although for a car I'd recommend you get the proper nuts.

Steel wheel nuts have a taper, alloy wheel nuts usually have a flat section with a big washer where they touch the alloy. Maybe if you post pictures of the alloy wheel and one of the nuts we can be of more help?
Also the shaft of the nut below the washer should be a tight fit in the hole of the wheel. Put a tapered seat nut on an alloy wheel and it wont be secure, at worst the alloy wheel will crack. (or go flying off into the shrubbery)

Try and get some Magna wheel nuts to make sure and drop a little loc tite on the studs?
