View Full Version : Options for boot?

I don't have much room in my boot (2nd gen) because it has an LPG system fitted and there's a big-ass gas tank in there.
I currently have one sub and was thinking of getting a second, but in huge, bulky boxes it would look terrible, if it fit at all.
So what are my options? I would like to take the subs out of the boxes and put them in the boot floor or sides. But I'm guessing that would mean I need to build walls and a false floor for it, and considering how big subs are that would cut a whole section of space out.
What would you do?

Personally I would keep the subs in the factory box if its a ported box.
And from what I've been quoted to put a false boot + walling in it wasn't worth the hassles.

I think I'd be able to do it myself, so all I'd need is wood and carpet. I'd recarpet the whole boot if I knew anywhere to get some nice coloured carpets.
Anyone know how much it costs to get an LPG system removed?
Can you fiberglass? You could build a fiberglass shell that follows the contours of the boot corners, remove that, build up the layers to a reasonable thickness and fiberglass in an MDF front panel with a hole to suit the sub. Drill small holes through the shell to run wires and mounting screws.
Doesn't show the start, but this and the next few vids show how to. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzng9HeGNPE
Angrier single sub in side mount box? Or do you not care for boot space? I know the awesome way I would do it but it would take way too much typing on my phone to explain how to do it. Basically inverted mounted floor firing subs in a pair of very custom and time consuming boxes, or a single box if your tricky.

I wish, it'd be a great skill to have. I'm thinking of making a floor/walls out of MDF. But if I wall in the back, covering the LPG tank it will make the boot look a lot smaller. Plus I don't like how you need gaps in the back wall for the boot lid brackets to go into, it looks a bit odd. So I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

I'd like to have some boot space, but I guess it's not that important. I shouldn't have gotten a car with LPG. I think I'd prefer to mount the subs on the side walls of the boot.
My current amp/sub are fairly old, $45 each from the pawn shop. I want matching subs so I'll be looking around at second hand places and pawn shops tomorrow to see if I can get a pair, I don't really have enough money to be spending on a set of new subs and amps, as well as the boot install. Well, I do, but I'd also like to get my car computer sometime and that's going to cost $450.

doing the floor alone would be $60-$150 depending on all the materials and finish you want to go for, and a good days work.

I'm considering lining it with vinyl instead of carpet, that's cheap at Lincraft and Spotlight. MDF shouldn't be too expensive, hopefully I can cut corners a bit haha.
I guess I can, once again, put off getting my car computer. That'll leave me with a budget of around $400 for the audio gear and boot install I'll be getting.
I'm set on getting these:
http://catalogues.repco.com.au/offer/car-audio-systems-speakers-subwoofers/fusion-5-25-2-way-210w-speakers/4njxys0i5.html?source=catalogue
Because my current front speakers cost me $15 brand new. My rears are good, but the fronts were just a stopgap. Is Fusion a good car audio brand? I'll have them in the front door trims, I guess putting the tweeters right next to the speakers wouldn't be a problem? I don't really have the skill to fiberglass some custom pillar mounts for them.
So currently I'm thinking of installing a floor/walls in the boot. Getting the set of 2-way fronts linked above and a 4ch amp for all my incar speakers and getting a sub to match the one I have, or a pair of new matching subs for the boot on the 2ch amp I already have.

Thought I should add, for any of the audio guys.
What I currently have:
Alpine MRV-T500 Amp
Power rated at 12V
2 x 50W @ 4 ohms (0.08% THD)
2 x 100W @ 2 ohms (0.3% THD)
1 x 200 W @ 4 ohms (0.3% THD)
power rated at 14V
2 x 75W @ 4 ohms (0.08% THD)
2 x 150W @ 2 ohms (0.3% THD)
1 x 300W @ 4 ohms (
Clarion Pro Audio PA12-S 600w Sub
Injected Polypropylene Titanium Coated Cone
Single 50 m/m heat resistant Voice Coil
Rear-Vented Pole Piece
Foam Rubber Surround
Large 40 oz Strontium Ferrite Magnet
Chromed Metal Basket
Suitable for sealed and vented Installation
600W Music Peak Power
They're fairly old. But they do the job. I might replace the sub.
I wanted to keep the amp, but the sub's from around 04-05, but I think the amp is early 90's. I don't want to have to replace all the gear I have now. It looks like tomorrow I'm going to have to buy two subs, two amps and a set of fronts.
I suppose you really need to ask yourself "what am I trying to achieve?"
If your after more bass, chances are you'd be better off palming off your current sub n amp and getting something decent.. Adding 1 crap sub to match another crap sub is just giving you twice the surface area of crap subs, and more of a headache to fabricate a suitable box, as well as consume more boot area.
What equipment are you currently running?
Lol way to beat me to it :P
Use that amp for your front speakers and invest in a monoblock for sub duties. I agree with replacing the sub, it'll be much more effective than getting a second sub.

So get a new mono amp and a single sub and leaving the rear 6x9's without an amp? That might actually work out cheaper than I was thinking anyway.

If you are going to get splits and put tweeters right next to the 6"ish speakers, you are just wasting money and might as well just get 6" speakers alone, your better off putting your tweeters up top along the dash or door cards and 6"ish speakers down the bottom because the crossover splits the power for lower notes down to the bigger speakers and the higher notes to the tweeters for better optimised sound.

Haha yeah I looked into it a bit more, I think I'll put them at the top of the door trims.

dont rush yourself with any job, get everyones opinion, and when you think you have done enough research, do some more because im sure you will find yourself changing your mind again, cause i do lol, and try do a job as a whole so you got everything set up for what you want, otherwise you will probably end up changing stuff and wasting time and money, just some tips.

Haha thanks. I'll have some help when I get started on the boot install and putting the speakers in, so hopefully it should work out okay.
Just bought:
Clarion WQ3010D 1500w dual voice coil sub. - $130, the salesman said he thought the price was a mistake because it was so cheap. Not sure if he was being genuine or not.
Sony Xplod XM-GTX6040 four channel 600w amp. - $200, asked three salesmen at two different stores, they said it would be better to get this than a 600w monoblock for the same price and run the rear 6x9's (Kenwoods, cost $120 a few months ago) on it as well.
Fusion 5.25" 2-Way 210W Component Speakers - $50.
They also threw in a $70 wiring kit and two RCA adapters for $30

I'll be getting some MDF and vinyl/carpet and making a custom boot install. And installing the Fusion components whenever my new door trims get here.

ah i see you are after a tight budget :P also look at getting some sound deadening material for your boot atleast and foam tape off the rear of your number plate as it will help on boot rattle, atleast be nice to the other drivers out there to not have so much heavy boot rattle, plus you may hear some. Your rear tail light by your windscreen will need some foam tape as well to stop rattle.
Sorry to say but the salespeople were morons :( 4 channel fail, it doesn't accommodate your needs at all, I would really recommend exchanging it.
The sub is a dual 4 ohm, which either works well over all 4 channels of the new amp (which is really not a good way to do it) or works horribly over 2 channels of either the new or old amp.
Salespeople are there to make a sale and couldn't give a crap if you get the most of your money, I'm not getting paid, and I've been dealing with advanced audio design, fabrication and tuning for nearly 10 years.
The sub I'm sure you will be happy with, while you may have been able to do better, it is completely suitable for your needs, while a 12" sub may have been better if your after volume, as you plan on making a new box anyway right?
Go check out jaycar, they are an excellent budget stop for car amplifiers, not sure what their current range is but expect 800w rms for $250.

Bugger. I don't think I can exchange it so I'll install it and see what it sounds like and then if I need to get a mono block amp I'll get one after that. Yeah the sub seems really nice, it is 12" and yeah we'll be making something up for it.

Haha yeah, I wasn't really rushing though. Even if I took the time I probably would have went the same route, three different salesmen at two stores suggested it, it was kinda hard to say no.
Would it be worth installing my old Clarion Pro Audio PA12-S 600w Sub as well? Or would that just lower the quality of the bass? I like the idea of having two, equal sized Clarion subs. I really hate it when things aren't symmetrical, I think it's minor OCD or something. But the sub's like five years old, and half as powerful. I'm thinking it could either add a little bonus, or just take away from my new sub, so I don't really know what to do.
Don't install it, they shop has recommended and sold you a product that does not suit your needs, they have to offer you an exchange by law. If you install it it's merely going to make it harder to exchange.
Don't let your eagerness get the better of you, exchange it and get a mono. A mono that puts out 500+wrms at 2ohm.
In fact, when you go to exchange it, before you do the exchange come back on here and show us the amp that you plan on exchanging the 4 channel for, you could just make another mistake.

Well you do sound pretty adamant haha. Okay I'll go in tomorrow and see about exchanging it. I'll have a look to see if I can find the mono amp I was looking at online. Would it be worth putting in my old sub as well or just having the one?

just don't rush yourself, go around like you did, get quotes, see what they say, write it down, then come back and go around, ask your actual friends or people you know in the business that know sound or whatever you are looking into at doing, woob is a perfect example, so yeah.

Yeah I'll have to learn how to do that. I'm the most impatient person. I'll make sure to double check everything with people on here from now on.
This is the mono amp I was looking at:
http://au.kenwood.com/Car_Entertainment/Power_Amplifiers/KAC-M615D
I'd be able to swap the Xplod amp for that one, if it's suitable.
Stick with just the new sub. Mixing subs can actually cause so much cancellation in the sound waves that it can end up being quieter than with a single sub. I good example is an experiment we did once, we had a kicker l7 12" and a kicker comp vr 12", we tested with both subs running, then removed the comp vr, which halved the power output, and speaker surface area.. We gained over 2dB with the single sub.
There used to be a "show car" in Perth that ran 2 15" subs, 2 12" subs and 2 10 dubs.. The massive cancellation from the subs resulted in a horrid sounding and very quiet system.
Mix and matching CAN work, but it's rate and either requires detailed calculations, or a he'll of a fluke!
That amp is really a bit too puny, look for 500w rms+ @ 2 ohm, write that down if you need to and ask the sales person for something so suit your needs.

Well I'll have a look, but I'm not sure what I'd be able to find. I don't really want to spend much more than I already have. There was that mono amp for $200, another for $230 and the rest were around $300-$600. So if I can't find one at 500w at 2 ohms, what should I do, settle for the smaller mono amp or keep the stereo amp?
