Hey guys, I picked up my TE 1996 Magna a while back but I've finally saved up enough to start modding and adding bits and pieces.

I was just wondering what the stock tire size is for a TE 96' Magna?
I'm looking to add new rims as I'm currently with the stock caps, and because my tires are newish and have good tread I'm looking to keep my tires and add rims as is without spending buckets of cash on both Tires and Rims.

Thanks guys :)

Jake

If it's on hubcaps, I think you'd have 15" rims.

The wheel size will be on your current tyres. There should be a number like 205/65R15. The last number is the wheel diameter.

15" is bloody small - I wouldn't purchase rims in that size. For what it's worth, I don't think there were any 3rd gens that came with alloys in that size.

For the sake of aesthetics, I would be look at 16" or even 17".

Yeah I thought they would be 15".
So I should be buying 17-18" tires? and then adding rims?

Smallest stock original alloy size is 16" on the Magna, 215 by 60 - same rolling circumference as the 15" steel wheels. These can be had cheaply, as no one wants them (well, hardly anybody). Worth looking for, should only be a couple of hundred with good tyres.

are you sure about that? i'm pretty sure the Solara's had 15" alloys

Erm, the TL LS came with 15" alloys...

Solara had 16s. TL ES had option of 15" alloy

Right! Well, am I wrong Again? I thought 16" alloys were the smallest alloys that would fit the front brakes. I was just thinking of my TJ, I guess. Any of the 15" alloys look any good? OP wants alloys but keep the current tyres, could be a good option for him. Anyone got pictures?

TJ Adance has optional 15 inch alloys, tyre size 205 65 r15

You would buy 16 or 17 inch rims then get appropriate tyres, don't do it until its been lowered though, and you will need larger rims to accomodate a 380 brake upgrade. I f you can get all this done at once you will save on labor

Solara's between TF-TJ had 15" wheels, TL Solara's had 16's.

Just pointing out that the 215/60R16 is a lot bigger than 205/65R15 in rolling diameter/circumference:
205/65R15 OD = 647.5mm
215/60R16 OD = 664.4mm
that is 16.9mm difference which is way over the recommended range.
Just go 235/45R17 on 17x7.5" rims which gives you OD of 643.3mm, which is much closer to original. Tyres in that size are dirt cheap as well. Just have to make sure the tyre are at least 95 load rated.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html agrees with your numbers, but also says 100 KPH on the 16" tyres is actually 102.6 KPH, which should be acceptable.

I'm pretty sure my TL on stock 15 alloys is reporting faster than it's actually going; one possibility is that the speedos are calibrated for a standard of 16" with 215/60R16, so when they are fitted with 205/65R15, you're actually going a bit slower than the speedo says (but only by the order of about 2-3km/hr). Don't have hard evidence to back this up, but those roadside radar displays at roadworks always show me going slower than my speedo shows (not that you'd rely on one of those radars)...

Had the same issue on the TS before getting some 16s. Unfortunately the tyres on the new car had more tread than the old 16s, so decided it was better to stick with the 15s it came with rather than swapping the wheels.
