Just after some info on some deafening noise coming from what I assume is the exhaust in my TE. I've got a pretty severe front rocker cover leak and there is a huge amount of grease built up around the exhaust outlet just underneath it. Could it be possible that the leaking oil has melted holes in the pipe causing the deafening drone under load between 2 - 3k rpm? Is it also possible for the outlet to be blocked up with grease causing the noise? Any other possibilites? It's killing me so I'm going to fix it Sunday or Monday.

Oil leaking onto an exhaust pipe will just carbonise and mix with road dirt, does look a bit like grease, but it can't damage the pipe or get inside it. You are best off looking for a hole in a pipe, flexible joint or muffler. Could also be a broken exhaust manifold gasket.

No, it's not killing you - it's just annoying. lol

yeah the oil might have perished the gasket.

I had the same issue with my TE . at the same RPMs , At light throttle it doesn't do it , Only had higher rpms it would make a rattle sound.

Everyone thought it was the flexi pipe in the exhaust , But it turned out to be the y pipe instead . Inside the y pipe there is a metal diverter and with age it rusts and comes off its welds and starts rattling .

It cann't be repaired , so a totally new y pipe is needed , I went to my local pickapart wreckers and I pulled one off a low ks magna and it worked great.

The pipe was $10 .

I had a similar issue. The whole was on the y pipe on the top edge and was about the size of a 50c coin. The guy saidits a crap weld job on all pipes. Anyway mine had completly broken off and ended up somewhere along the exhaust.

Anyway $40 welded up. My advice, take it to an exhaust shop and they can find the problem

Thanks for the advice guys. Is the Y pipe easy to swap over if I pick another up?

my y piece broke in my old exhaust but i got a new engine so it went away. The best thing to do, if you can, is to go custom. Extractors will eliminate the issue you have, or you could get second hand stock ones but they will eventually perish. I'd go to an exhaust shop, or jack your car up and get a section of garden hose and listen around your exhaust pipe for leaks. I had a terrible rattle one stage, before the y piece, and i had 2 little holes in my mufflers on the back sides just from hitting stuff and wear and tear, surprising how much noise they made for just a few cm of hole

If you can jack the car up, put it on stands & remove wheels, then swapping the y piece over will be a piece of cake for you to swap!
