View Full Version : TF brake squeeling when rolling.
I have a slight issue with the brakes on my TF. It sounds like the rear right pads are slightly rubbing on the rotor. There is quite a high pitched squeeling while rolling but if I apply a small amount of brake it dissappears.
It cant need new pads as they were replaced 5000km ago and they were bed in properly.
Is it possible that I have a sticky caliper? What can I do to try? Or does this sound like a wheel bearing?

Check / adjust the hand brake.

It could be the handbrake as i have had the same issue and the only thing that you can do it back the adjustment off abit. Otherwise it could also be that the caliper pistons are not returning into the bore full causing a little bit of the pad to rub when they should be retracted, i have the same issue with my front pads so i think the calipers need a re-build.

i had a similar problem with noisy brakes.
the mechanic while the car was in service, said the pads were made up of a harder compound and it built up muck from stopping.
used a bit of brake cleaner and fixed that.
yeh im not sure,
car needs a new engine mount and i think the power steering pump needs some attention and I dont have the time to do it at the moment, so might get it booked in and get them to look at the pads at the same time

I just changed the rear pads on my wifes te and now its starting to do the same, although i did have to remove the hub on the l/h rear and i have put it down to the hand brake. I had to remove the hub to change 2 wheel studs and i had to remove the hand brake shoes, i know i have put everything in right again but the noise sort of comes and goes, have tried to pull up the hand brake in forward and reverse, noise goes but the odd time it comes back again.

If the pads were changed without the discs being changed or machined the pads could be squealing against the lip on the disc.
Remove the pads and champfer\file a small 45 degree angle along the top and bottom edge of the pad and refit them. That should help.

Also use some antisqueal on the pads, this is an orange glue that holds the pads back against the calipers, make sure your sliders are nice and free as well

Im 99% sure its not coming from the pads, the noise is like every revolution the wheel turns, and its on the l/h rear, the only side i removed the hub to change 2 wheel studs. I had just knocked down the hand brake shoes from the adjuster which gave me enough clearance to remove and replace the wheel studs, then when i finished i just gave the shoes a tap up again and locked them back into the adjuster the way they were. But im thinking the hub must be slightly rubbing on the hand brake shoes.

UPDATE...Finally i figgured it out. Because the rear l/h side had 2 broken wheel studs (which is how we brought the car recently) and the knob heads did up the other 3 studs cause it to warp the disc rotor. The noise became apparant when i fitted new brake pads, the noise wasn`t there with the old worn out pads as it was clearing the rotor. So now im replacing the disc rotor today and im sure that will fix the problem, when i spin the rotor it is obvious that it is warped.
