Last night i was driving my 2002 tj ralli//art magna and i opened her up a bit when i heard a huge bang and fire went everywhere.........
basically from what we can make out the piston has shattered and exited the block on the firewall side of motor leaving a nasty hole
im not sure exactly what has happened yet but i am open for opinions
basically i have a 2000 tj vrx lying in my yard with complete motor but the drives are stuffed i.e suspension and steering
but the problem with my ralli///art was at complete random as it was running beautifully prior
insurance wont cover it as it comes under wear and tear

Save your cams from the ruined engine, then put them into the vrx engine and then put the vrx engine into your railliart :D

alot of people have said that all ready but didnt the ralli art have better pistons????

It had a better tune, cams and exhaust that all from what I'm aware from :) As long both motor have the same size engine capacity go for it :D
better cams, better flowing heads, higher compression pistons, LSD in the manual gearboxes.

how big of a job and cost but
i dont have the time to do it

Arent the pajero piston the same as ralliart ones?

if you put the cams in the vrx motor and get the car tuned it will have more power then your old engine anyway.
ralliart I think were 9.6:1, pajero 10:1
Extractors and tune as well I forgot.
380 engine and a re-tune?

i know the vrx had a better compression ratio

If we all got stuck in to help out - could be able to get this all knocked over quickly - in and out in a weelend.
Everything is going to bolt up to Lady Janes engine, just slot the ralliart cams ito LJs heads and off you go again. The engine in LJ is relatively easy to get at to start with, so thats half the battle won there.

How so? I thought higher would be better? unless you go FI.

they are both efi

FI = Forced Induction
I'd unbolt the heads and take a look for any damage, if none get them machined and bolt them onto your spare 6G74 complete. Then the engine will be mostly ralliart with only a very slight compression drop.
The stock 6G74 runs a 9:1
The Sports/VR/VR-X has a stock engine, there is nothing internally different, or different in tuning to other models
The ralliart 6G74 runs 9.4:1
The 6G75 runs 10:1

yeah and the cams lol

so what about going forged pistons while im at it????????????
Well, that is quite involved... Hope you've got deep pockets :)

why how much are they
Forged bottom-end rebuild, you're not likely to get change out of 5 grand... Swapping heads is just a basic "head gasket" cost, expensive but not excessive.

At the same time though.. while the engine is out.. may as well get it ready for more power should you decide thats what you think you want to do later on down the track.

I would seriously have a look at a 380 engine.
More torque, more capacity, and will more than likely work out cheaper than a bottom end rebuild / replacement equivalent to the ralliart.
Give Mal from mitsfix a call, he will be able to hook you up a ready to go set up if you are interested.
BTW, do you have to get an engineers certificate in QLD to fit the 380 motor?

I know of 1 in qld and 2 in vic all done with relevant state authorities and no issues and no certs needed
In Vic for an example, VicRoads use the max power generated in a Magna compared to a 380. The max was of course the Ralliart, they used these figures and from their records there was something like 3kw between the ralliart and the 380, they also acknowledge is the same engine class ie 6G series motor and is a bolt in. For emissions, as the car runs the same emissions as it did out of the factory and there have been no emissions modifications done they were also happy

so i would just need the 380 block and the altered oil pickup so i can run my original sump
Using ralliart extractors, the sump does not need to be touched. You will use the 380 heads as they are the highest flowing 6G heads in the range and have larger chambers (much more then the RA ones - sell them to recoup costs).

yeah but dont i need to alter the chassis to fit 380 sump???????

Hey mal do you have a altered 380 motor for sale?? To suit a tj i may go all out yet :)
Hi

No, the only issue with the 380 sump is factory headers and certain extractors. There are a few that clear without modification - Ralliart, HM, and RPW "Shortie" being a few.

Ummm so a few questions about the headers then
For starters, what are you going to mount the dipstick tube to as you can not use the 3.5 dipstick in the 380 sump and you can not mount the 380 dipstick tube to the alt bracket as it is on the 380 engine...
Also, the HM clear by about 5mm, I for one would not be comfortable in having that much heat in that area

It's quite a simple mod to use the 380 dipstick and mount it, i'll take a photo when i do mine next week.

Am sure it is quite simply as would be a matter of simply moving the mount or for that matter a little twist and you could mount it elsewhere but this still does not resolve the exhaust being only about 5mm from the sump
Personally I want a little more clearance so will take the extra hour to change sumps lol.

lol can't wait for it to be back on road :'(
got slotted brakes and strut brace
now just waiting on motor and ecu lol

I'd rather leave the engine lubricating system intact, unmodified and as designed lol
Next time you park your car after a decent drive, see how close you can get your hand to the exhaust...you'd be surprised ;)

The wait is the killer isn't it? I'm in the same boat...not too much longer hopefully.
