View Full Version : LSD fitted
Hay all
I had an Quaife LSD fitted to my gearbox. Picked up my gearbox today he gave me my old diff witch had a little bit of wear little bits of metal that have come of a couple of the teeth only little bits of metal no full teeth or nothing car drove perfect before fitting LSD. Qustion is i asked him was the rest of the box fine no chipped teeth or nothing he said yeah but sounded unsure i asked him again but he sounded unsure. So i wanna open the box up and check it myself. Can someone give me step by step on opening these boxes up or 2 hard?

Did you ask them to check/recondition the box at the same time or did you just ask for the diff to be fitted?
Spending all that money on an LSD, having it fitted to the gearbox, r+r of gearbox seems a little silly to me without spending the bit extra to get the rest of the box done.
If you asked them to check/reco the box take it back and make sure they do what you paid them to do.
As for doing it yourself, download the service manual and have a look.

If you asked them to check it i'm sure they would have as it gives them more chance to get more money out of you if something is stuffed.
Then again, maybe they were just after a quick job and were happy to take your money and didn't pay attention to the rest of it.
To pull the box apart to check everything properly etc isn't a quick job and a requires more than a basic tool set to do.
Download the service manual that is uploaded on the forum somewhere and have a look at it to see what is required .

Getting my LSD fitted, I chose to spend a shitload of money getting my LSD fitted and gearbox reconditioned at a reputable gearbox specialist. The gearbox is the most expensive part of my car now...
Apparently mistu revised all the sychros in the magna boxes, requiring new sleeves in order to fit new synchros, pumping the cost up by $500...
What gear oil are you going to use??

Your not meant to use an oil with too many friction modifiers, else u chance blowing the diff up because the gears inside the LSD have no friction.
A fair few people on other forums have blown torsen type LSD's by using gear oil/ MTF that has heavy duty friction modifiers.

Castrol Syntrans 75W/85 or Redline MT90 depending on your budget.
Is this gearbox oil ok. http://www.nulon.com.au/products/Gear_and_Differential_Oils/Full_Synthetic_75W-85_Smooth_Shift_Manual_Gearbox_and_Transaxle_Oil/

Not that I can tell because it contains friction modifiers.

Nulon Smoothshift SAE 80. Feels good in my reco gearbox, and doesnt make the diff noisy (which is meant to happen if you use something with friction modifiers).
I'll get around to putting MT90, and I'll see how it goes with that.
I have yet to lay down 11sies either...
