I was going round the round about and my fuel light didn't come on. It was just below a quarter in the tank, more then enough to get me to the service station i wanted to go to. But all the sudden as i'm going around the round about my car just lost power, the steering went stiff and it just switched off, i tried starting my car up just in case, so it kicked over a few times, like the engine started and died right away after about 1.5 seconds of being on.

I don't know what to think of it, I thought maybe the car had just run out of fuel and it was on a bad angle but i got the car pushed up to a leveled piece of ground and it did the same thing just kicked on and went back off...!

I had to get it towed home...I wandered down to the service station and grabbed 5ltrs with a small fuel canister but i have to wait until my house mate wakes up this morning to try and jump start it (as the hazards and everything drained it out while waiting for the tow truck)..

Any ideas as to what it might be?.

Fuel pump would be my guess, either that or you dont have as much fuel as you think you do

lets hope for the latter.

Sounds like low fuel to me - the round about forces the fuel out of the swirl pot which the pump sits in and sucked air. The fuel gauges has a habit of failing so maybe the reading was incorrect.

Put 5ltrs in to it and got the battery charged its starting up, adjusted the throttle a little because soon as i was taking my foot off the accelerator it was dying out, my old man said the throttle was probably a bit out but its starting now the needle went up a little with the 5ltrs i put in it.

Letting the battery charge a little longer, then driving up to the petrol station to put some more in it. Heres to hoping.

Ok so i'm home again $25 worth in the tank, its cutting out heaps as ive been driving around the block, but when i start it, the rpms go up then straight down and before it chokes it goes back up a bit and is sitting on a rough idle, but when i was driving when in D gear the car was cutting out when i came to a complete stop but i tried shifting it to L/2/3 and it seemed to work perfect...?!

could be fuel pump, or if your coming to a complete stop in gear and it cuts out, then thats more related to TPS. if your car cruises fine, and you put the foot down a little and there is no bogging down or cutting out, and this only happens when you come to a complete or near complete stop, then i doubt its fuel pump

Check the MAF plug and socket.

Ok so the developments as of now. My old man sprayed some carb cleaner into the air filter. The cars RPMs are now sitting steadier, but he put some injector cleaner in the fuel tank because he suspects that I have gotten some bad fuel in the lines. So we drove from Redcliffe to Caboolture and we just rolled into Burpengary when the engine light came on and it was misfiring and my dad was accelerating and the engine check light went away but it misfired and ended up being stuck on the side of the road, after 20 minutes of my dad with the car in park accelerating the car blew a bunch of black smoke periodically and then stopped misfiring and coming up with the engine light but still not running right so its at his place now. Stuck with his VS commodore for a few days *shudders*.

Clean the throttle body & MAF? Sounds a little worse than a dirty throttle body though. Black smoke = rich. Leaky or stuck injector? How was fuel economy just prior to your problem? If all of this just happened suddenly I'd be looking for something obvious - broken loose connections and vacuum lines, maybe some damage/cracks in the induction side of things.

Its been a while so i thought id freshly update this thread. Ok so spoke to my dad who has had my car for weeks while ive been stuck with a commodore. He's run some metho into my fuel tank apparently after doing that the cars running smoother but its not idling at all if he takes his foot off the accelerator it just dies out straight away..? any suggestions!?

Hmm ok...so did it stall on idle or when you were accelerating?

stalled in idle everytime i stopped the car would die everytime had to keep foot on brake and acelerate same time to stop stalling
from memory cost 30.00 from wreckers takes 1 min to install to be 100% sure shoot madmagna a pm to confirm

Check the ISC too.. Possibly shit itself!

Pull it out, clean it up and remember to use rubber grease for the o-ring when refitting it!

Just another possibility..

Silly question, but they are always easier to answer... Is there a vacuum hose off or split somewhere? This will lean out the mixtures at idle and it will probably stall. at higher revs, there will be enough air/fuel so that a small air leak into the intake (whereever) will not be as noticeable.

Just take it to Mal, get it looked at, screw the home remedies and asking on here, cause you'll get a billion answers despite everyone genuinely trying to help.

That's what forums are about - asking for answers. The OP is in Queensland....a long drive to Melbourne.

Stupid question but what is an ISC?

idle speed control controls the idle this is the thing i was talking about from previous post

Ok so we replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter, it still won't idle unless you keep some acceleration going...and when u hold ur foot steady at 1000rpm, it jumps back and forth from 1100,1000rpm without moving your foot...and as soon as you take the foot off the pedal it either dies out or idles for a few minutes before cutting out...

Check to see the ISC is okay and if all else fails get a local mechanic run a diagnostic.. It may throw up a few errors.

Check theres no splits in your air intake as well.. Could be a vacuum leak..
