Hi Brett,
This has been covered many many times in the Car Audio section of the forums. I'd recommend doing a search there and you'll find a few threads with pictures and whatnot on how to do this. In short, you don't need to take the top part out completely, but you do need to pop the clips out to get at the screws holding the centre section in.

yeah i have searched through the forum already, the problem im having the top part with the vents is when you clip out the two clips do you just yank it out a bit, i don't really want to yank it incase it breaks. should you be using a special tool to take of the clips i just used my knife and fingures

With mine I pushed the clips out from behind the console :D You only need to be able to pry the bottom lip of the vent section out a bit to get a screw driver in to the screws holding the top part of the centre console section on. Loosen the screws till you can pop the centre bit out. I still haven't been able to get the top vent part out completely - too paranoid about breaking something.
To get the top vents out there is a cable connected behind the console to your vent control.
You can get to the clip from underneath the drivers side footwell. If you need more info ill post a pic up tonight of what im talking about
Unclip this and it will come out smoothly.

Just treat it like you would treat your girlfriend, gentle yet firm and she'll open up eventually.
...and no comments about me getting mine done by a professional
Ok remove the bottom part of the dash under the drivers side footwell. The red circles are where screws are located.

Once thats removed. Unclip the cable circled and pull away from lever.
