Just driving today and the gearbox just gave out. Couldn't select any gears at all. Engine still runs, and revs when accelerator is pushed.

It's at the mechanics now, but want ideas about the problem for when they ring tomorrow after looking at it.

how much and what type of reco'd gearbox could i put in if worst comes to worst

Sounds like the wave spring has chucked it in, my auto is still ok but asked a local transmission guy what a reconditioned auto is worth for a 3rd generation and he said $2200, so guess thats what you maybe up for, how many K's has your car done? cheers

I would just buy somebodys old auto box and stick it in. There is near to no demand for them on here so someone might have one sitting around for a few hundred.

Is not the Wave Spring, is the oil pump that will have caused this. The wave spring MAY have caused the oil pump to let go but is often not the case

I have secondhand ones for $650 or reco for $1600 with the revised spring installed

Sorry to hear about your auto Adza. Did the fluid ever get changed before hand? Did the car do a lot of towing?

Fluid probably was changed at 100000. Would they need to pull the box to change the oil pump?. The place says it need to open it up to find the problem approx $3000 if it needs a new gearbox. Thinking of just selling Otto Wreckers if it costs that much. Any thoughts please.

Is that the whole gearbox for those prices or the oil pump?

yeah l would buy a second hand one from ebay .
you can get one for around 200 to 400. better than 2200.

This happened to me last night, no signs just bang, no drive no reverse, eventually got drive and sport shifted it to my mates house, it was grinding by time I got to his, 205,000 on clock bloody not happy as it's came at the worst time!

Hoping to get Mal to fix it in a few weeks after my trip!

hi guys , i to have the problem with auto in my tj . i had stopped then drove off the car made a sort of grinding sound then lost all drive , i pulled over the motor still ran just no drive forward or reverse, oil change 5k ago , as i live in country vic no auto trans people here , is it worth trying the disconnect battery trick ? at first auto was locked up like it was in park , then was able to move car , so towed it home , any tips ?, has a leaking heater core could that leak onto ecu?

Might be the wave spring thats gone. If it is, new box time! Good time to convert to manual!
