Hi all,
New here. Just bought a '01 TJ Exec a few days ago, and have found the forums invaluable already!!
The guy I bought the car off was the first owner, and he told me the radio was original and a pioneer - but its missing the face plate. But today I found a 12-stack pioneer cd unit in the boot and I figured that wasnt stock. So I searched the forums and they say the factory radio was a clarion.
I thought I could get an original radio face plate and I'd be good, but that plan is out the window. I figure my only option is to buy a new radio, or would another pioneer face plate fit on?
I don't want to rewire anything, so thinking I can just buy a Pioneer stereo and it'll plug straight into the plugs that are already there and be the same physical size? Is that correct, or am I going to have to take the radio out to identify the model to ensure plug type etc?
Any general advice appreciated
Pioneer have likely superseded their plug type which means you will need to wire a new harness on. You will need to get an exact faceplate match, you can't chop and change.

Hi woob,
thanks. I decided to take out the radio to settle it. Its a Pioneer KEH-p1015. The new pioneers have the same power lead, but dont have the blue connector? The manual I DL'd for it shows the pin settings for the blue connector (as shown), with lots of BUS R and L and - and + descriptions. Do you think a new pioneer will work without the lead that goes to that the blue socket? I'm assuming it be for the 12 stack CD unit in the boot? Once again, appreciate any advice. http://goo.gl/HZiOJ
If they still use exactly the same plug then it should be fine as they would not alter pin configurations without also altering the plug, not do not rely on my advice on this. Confirm it with a pioneer retailer.

nope, the new pioneer decks have a different connector.
the blue connector would just be for the stacker.
just buy a deck you like, and get it installed.
I'm sure someone you know owns a soldering iron and some wire cutters.

And if you don't have a soldering iron, just use these. Pairs for speakers, singles for power - easy to cut.

thanks all, a bunch of good suggestions. I'll start with the retailers advice, but that last connector looks easy enough. cheers!

Any hardware store has the connector strips, rows of 12 but I cut them up into pairs and singles. Once I've identified speaker wire pairs, and the others, I connect them up then put a masking tape label on them for future use, if i ever need to change the head unit again.

Well, I replaced the older pioneer with a deh-p1350. The connector was different, but the coloured wires were all the same. So I used the connector strips as mentioned above, matched them up and presto, it all works.
One question though, I notice the antenna isn't extending? Is the TJ '01 Executive antenna manual or electric. If electric, whats my options? Thanks in advance

Im pretty sure its manual.. You can check by either looking in the boot on the side where the antenna is and see if there's a motor behind the boot cover.. If not.. MANUAL!
If Electric.. Check the Antenna wire on your deck..

My TJ 01 exec came with a manual aerial, I'm sure that was standard on these. My Pioneer only needs about 30 cm of aerial up around town, so that is where it stays permanently. Electric aerial can be fitted easily, an aftermarket aeropro unit is available that can be wired in.

Just a heads up, the 01 tj will be manual antenna, unless modified, and pioneer just give you an 'amp turn on' wire, not an antenna, last time I looked, it will raise an antenna though, even in cd or usb mode.
Electric aerials came on rada's, and TL onwards, IIRC.

thanks for reply MadMax and SHOOT.
I had a look, but can't see much. There's a white thingo next to it, and a cable to the antenna, but when i run my hand along the antenna, there doesnt seem to be anything substantial connected to it. Maybe the pic will help confirm it? Don't want to yank antenna up if it is electric.:)

nah thats a manual antenna mate, theres alot more wiring around there with a power antenna. By the way, id suggest soldering and taping/heatshrinking your connections instead of those terminal strips.

Definitely manual. Same as mine. Yank away to your heart's content. lol
The white plastic thing at the bottom is actually an electric motor that operates a cable when you press the boot popping button in the glove box. On upper spec models this motor is bi directional, one direction pops the boot, the other direction opens the fuel flap. Clever stuff, Mitsu engineers!

How hard is it to fit an electric one? I will have to run remote wire to the head unit?
