hey guys,
ok so as suspected i have been caught by a failed auto trans in my TJ VRX all of a sudden i was driving and no gears, no reverse, etc...i managed to get it going and limped to a mates place 5 mins down the road, by time i got to his place it was making a grinding noise and limping,
What are my options? does anyone have a 5 speed auto for a TJ VRX they are selling? i simply need the car going asap and cheap as possible.
Mal, mits fix? are you able to help me with a second hand and fitting?
The car is in Rowville, it doesn't even move forward in neutral :(
help would be appreciated
Cheers

I'm pretty sure Mal would have a few 5 speed auto gearbox's to choose from and i think he does fitting, should message him then? i know he takes out engines so i can only think he would do a gearbox as well Cheers Chris.
Considered a manual conversion?

yeh and no...i need the car fixed asap, im getting a work car within the next few days, and i have a car to use for now as my brother has his old corolla still, how much will manual conversion cost?
Damn annoying cos i happened all of a sudden and at a bad time (going overseas in 8 days for 2 weeks) so the $$$$ are limited.
Depends on what you're using.
Mine was a 3lt kit with a exedy hd clutch and ended up around the $1650 mark (drive in drive out).
Worth every cent - Outperforms the auto time and time again, power everywhere, much more fun to drive, and no fear of doing another wave spring.

Man if this only happened to you about 3 months ago! Jollys had like 2x 5sp gearboxes!
If you don't plan to keep the car for a long time, then consider getting a 5sp box from the wreckers. Any KJ series 2 Verada will have them along with any of the TJ onwards Sports models. (Jollys had both of these about 3 months ago :( ) I'd give a ring to Imlachs and some other local wreckers. I know about 6 months a shithole wreckers in Cambelfield had a GTVI he was dismantelling. He only deals in cash w/no reciepts and what appears to be a dump.
I'd even look into the pickles damaged auctions - I've seen sports magnas go for $500. Take the box out and swap it over, then sell off a few bits and you've made your money back. Wreckers will probs give you like a $100 for the shell as well.
So sorry to hear about the gearbox kicking it - the 5sp boxes are so expensive to replace as well :( ... you're looking at an easy 2-2.5k for a reco one. Speak to Mal - he has a few in stock.
Honestly I'd recommend getting a manual conversion and then selling it or something. It'd cost around 1.5k with installation of a 3L box and probably around 1.7-1.8k with the 3.5L version. Being a VRX means that it is a sport model so having a manual version wouldn't be that difficult to sell and would appeal alot to the younger or younger-at-heart market. You may need to factor in the cost of a manual ecu & dash or opt for just 'tricking' the ecu to think the car is always in Neutral. Otherwise you shouldn't have any other issues with the conversion. It'd at least make the car sellable and then you can get rid of it or enjoy the fun of a manual vrx ;) (its how they were meant to be enjoyed imho)
Good luck with it buddy - I'm also in rowville/ferntree gully border so if Im happy to help, if I can, on the weekends.

All good guys, I have a few boxes here with the mid 70's on them, has been set up for the week after he gets back from work
When you lose all drive like this and also lock up in N then the issue is not generally a Wave Spring issue, is usually the internals of the box have collapsed, this is caused by one of the large nuts which hold one of the gear sets on coming loose and then letting go all together
