Hi guys,

thanx a bunch the help with my wifes brakes.. what a nightmare..

now it seems my headlights are playing up. in short, they wont turn off.

got home from work the other day, turned the lights and parkers off, turned the car off completely then noticed my headlights were still on.
I turned the ignition back on and flicked the switch on and off a couple of times and it eventually turned them off.
Now its gotten to the point where i have to unplug the bulbs to turn them off, very time consuming and irritating.
any clues or advice as to whats going on?? i tried to have a look at the stalk but didnt really know what exactly to look for :S

any help would be great as this is very irritating...

Thanks!
Tim

the solenoid for the headlights has to be sticking. its a little black thing about half the size of a matchbox under the fuse cover in the engine bay. If the little prong inside that moves when they are switch on gets stuck even with power off they will still see battery power.

ok, is that seperate to the headlight relay? ive already replaced the relay.

If you've replaced the relay then the next place to check is the actual switch. Why do you need to turn the ignition on to turn the headlights off...they should not be on the ignition circuit AFAIK..

Sorry, I realized I didn't word that very well.
The headlights stay on no matter where the key or switch is set. Thr only way to turn them off is to unplug the H4 bulbs from behind.
I can also turn the high beams on without the key in the ignition.
Would the problem be in the indicator stalk or elsewhere?

is it an elite or standard?
magnaman89 had a simular problem with someone who had installed an after market delay / run on system in the past. had us stumped for a while. see if the relay is getting hot. but otherwise unpluge the switch and see if it goes off.

ive got a spare combination switch from a standard tr you can have cheap if need be.

otherwise ill have a look in the manual and see if i think of anything lol

Thanx mate! Where is the plug forthe switch? That's what I've had trouble finding...
I recently installed spotlights as well, could that be contributing?

there could be current draining back into the system and activating the relay. its quite common if they system is wires in such a way that it can flow backwards. did you use a relay or how did you do it.

and the connectors are under the plastic cover that wraps around the steering wheel. ive only ever pulled one off a second gen but i think there is about 6 screws on the underside and the lift off in a top and bottom half if memory serves correctly.

It was wired with a relay and separate switch. Power feed from the H4 harness - power wire.

I've pulled both covers off, top and bottom but then got stuck. Does the stalk have to be removed? I couldn't see any wiring with just the covers off

I'm having a similar issue with my TR but my headlights wont turn on, I get the parkers but no driving lights or hi-beams, even the hi-beam indicator on the dashboard doesn't come on to let me know that I'm using hi-beams, I've replaced the relay, bulbs and checked cables

Update - the switch is now working - sometimes. But only when turning off.

Once the lights are off it will turn on first go everytime without but seems to wait a fraction of a second before doing so :S

When turning the lights off it takes a few goes of flicking the stalk switch to get them to switch off.
Progress? I hope so.. Does this ring any bells for anyone?

I'm still yet to check under the dash for the relay but I was under the impression it was just blade fuses down there in the footwell??

i had a look under the dash this morning and there were only 2 relays, one was for the defogger and i cant remember the other but it wasnt related to the lights...
is there just two or are there more hiding elsewhere??

oldmagna - how much are you asking for your switch? i might have to take that path...

pm sent.

its out of a tr wagon but ide think they are all the same. accept for fog lights. was in good nick when i pulled it out 6 months ago and has been in the shed since.

otherwise you need to remove the wheel then there is four screws / bolts from memory.
