Hay all

Ive got my car back from getting the LSD fitted and new clutch. Ive noticed only when doing a fast change from 2nd to 3rd gear it will crunch not to bad but it will crunch. Every other gear is fine it wont crunch but only 2nd to 3rd. Im going to willowbank soon so ill need this not to be crunching. Wat does people think could this be the clutch or the gearbox?

Probably the gearbox. Are you rev-matching? Take some of the work away from the synchros.

Ive kinda done the same thing ive always done. Its never crunched until now. Im talking fast changes here but ill snap 1st to 2nd nothing 2nd to 3rd crunch 3rd to 4th nothing 4th to 5th nothing so yeh frusterating.

I see another dead diff and gearbox thread in a matter weeks lol.

I expect the synchro on that gearchange is worn. Take it easy and shift slower kurt, you will break it very quickly. Its not designed to withstand the torrent of abuse you hand it

I only noticed it when i gave it a boot for the first time. Im not planning of smashing gears all the time. Im just wanting the fastest gear change when im at willowbank. So u reckon its not the clutch.

Give the new clutch some (gentle) road km to bed in. Your Willowbank excursions seem to be very harmful to your hip pocket - why not just treat your car as a sedate road machine rather than a wannabe dragster?
A low ET is just a number, a dead Magna is a very sad thing indeed. I know what I would do to make my car less likely to puke expensive bits. lol

Just a syncro, they are a wear item and very expensive to replace (Best reco the box and have them all done - $1500ish). My third "bites" a little with low-rpm shifts as well.

3rd gear in magnas seems to be the first to show issues... heard of a few of them now..

not very good if its only happened since the box has been opened to install the lsd though

there is a slight chance its clutch drag.. suprising if only in one gear though but possibly its the only gear your noticing it in... could try adjusting it a bit see if its changes anything...

sounds like Synchro wear.

May be lessened (or worsened) depending on the box oil you use.

Bedding in of gearbox components is very important brett, especially with new clutch and diff..

Castrol sytrans. Yeh that nulon additive got rid off my mates 2nd gear crunch. But i was told not to use a friction modifier with my quaife LSD.?

3rd Gear Synchro..

Had the same issue in my AW11 n AE82..

With the LSD they recommend to refrain from using any Friction Modifiers..

So my recommendation would be either Reco it and get them all done at the same time..

OR

Find another box in the mean time.. Have it reco'd and once they're ready to go.. Take your car in and have them pop the LSD in there and throw it in the car for ya..

But its not a cheap task.. On my old cars.. $1100ea I think it set me back.. with a few extra bits and bobs..

How do i fix clutch drag with a new clutch?

A couple of hundred km of normal driving should do it. The surface needs to bed in.

I found a gearbox oil change helped tremendously.

LSA fully synthetic

Both castrol and penrite gave me bad results.

I got mine from here: RedlineMTL / MT90 Gear Oil Gallon (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/e11051.m43.l1123/7?euid=68fe03a5761d48cdaaaed65221a03ee2&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com.au%2Fws%2FeBayISAPI. dll%3FViewItem%26item%3D170497354171%26ssPageName% 3DADME%3AX%3ARTQ%3AAU%3A1123)

One US gallon = 3.785 litres, just the right amount for 380 and 3rd gen Magna manual transmissions, $98 + $15 postage.

Cheapest Oz seller I could find, good service and quick delivery.

erad - they're in NSW (Eastwood) and they do 'pick up' so you might be able to score some without paying postage.
