Which magna/s came out with steering wheel stereo controls & would it be just a simple steering wheel swap over to a 97 TF Altera (no airbag)? Just bought a new stereo & it has either IR remote or plug for steering wheel controls. Would rather a steering wheel one than use the remote it comes with or get an ebay universal steering control.

XI Veradas came with steering wheel audio controls standard, I beleive EI / AWD could have possibly be optioned with it too though.
there is more to it, than just putting the controls in, you also require the clock spring on the steering wheel to make it all work.
My KL AWD had all the wiring (except clock spring) in there (it light up when powered) when we put the Wheel Controlls onto my car. You will also need some wiring harness to get from the clock spring to the head unit (and then the adapter kit to make the standard wheel controls to work with the aftermarket headunit)

Hmmm, makes me wonder if it's worth it or just go with some little ebay universal unit. I'd just like it to look like part of the wheel instead of some aftermarket addon.

The interface kit, that all sits behind the dash, you wont see any of that wher eit plugs into the back of the headunit, so that part wont look tacky or aftermarket there.

I was thinking something like this if it's too much mucking around for a proper steering wheel with stereo control, but it would look as tacky as hell

The does look tacky as hell, and it also looks like it's designed to mount on the right hand side of the wheel, which may not even work with your stereo.

Yeah true
If I could get a wired one that wouldn't be so bad, but I'd rather go with a steering wheel with stereo controls. There was one on ebay and I missed it by a few minutes. Bloody wife wanting to go to shops. Women

I have a Pioneer one I have attached to my wheel hub. It doesnt interfere with anything, and it is not wired. Also it can be detached, and also it doenst matter if it is left or right hand mounted.
Most manufacturers have these sort of things available. (I replaced my factory remote in my XI with this)
