Can you hear the lock engaging as disengaging when you use the remote? What about the key?

You can't pull the plastics off unless the tailgate is open, and there is several thick plastic pins around the edging, my guess one of the rods have come off the plastic clip (my old one was hangin just on until I got a new tailgate)

All I can think of is trying to pull it off from the window brake light,

Take the brake light and all that off first if you can get in the boot ( hoping you don't have a cargo barrier)

Once the brake light is out the plastic trims on either side of the brake light should pull off and go down to the main area of the tailgate

Now the fun part, on the main area on the gate, around the outside (where you can't get when its closed) there is 7-8 thick plasic pins, don't bother trying to brake them, far to hard,

When your sitting in the boot it will look as if all the gray area is in 2 pieces, 1 big piece where the speaker covers are and a thin strip just under the window, try and pull from the rear wiper motor and pull that whole middle section away, you should be able to see the rods for the central locking and just try then in different positions, try for the rod that goes to the exterior handle first

When you pull the handle on the gate, does it sound like it's doing anything right down the bottom? Here any metal getting knocked at all?

Of course..

You could always carve it up and get another from the wreckers..

First get one from the wreckers though.. Just in case!

did you try the key? I know you've got a wagon but with my sedan it has a little white locking switch on the latch and it had been set to lock. - must have been the lock fairies, cause none of the kids would own up! The boot release in the glovebox would not open the boot (my remotes stuffed so I couldn't try that) but the key did and after about 10 mins of fiddling and watching the cable move I realised that everything looked ok and something else must have been stopping it from working.

I haven't been hit.

While my mech is out I'll see if we can get the stupid thing open
