Hi all a quick question my timing belt broke on my v6 3.0l ts magna ,I have replaced the belt but the engine runs very badly is it possible to have bent the valves if so is it very expensive to fix . I should say I will do all the work myself

Yes, incredibly expensive.

I had the exact same problem on my TS, it was cheaper for me to just fit another motor, I was very lucky and found one on ebay that was in excellent condition for $150, I just had to replace, some seals, gaskets and the timing belt before I fitted it to the car, and its still going great two years later. To have a mechanic take the heads off and replace the valves, just guessing but I think that might be close to a grand to have that done, but thats just a guess.

Finding & fitting a good second hand engine would definitely be cheaper than trying to repair an engine with bent valves and possibly damaged piston crowns. As Deano TS mentioned make sure you fit new crank seals, gaskets & timing belt before you fit a 2nd hand engine.

New engine in mine cost $3500 (installed) but i got taken for a ride. Needless to say i have found another mechanic and never been back there. New engine could be a 'safeguard' against more things going wrong not far down the track if the price is right.

Yep, they bend. Fortunately they don't break right off at the head or damage the pistons. If you have both heads off, check them all. Take the heads and valves to a machine shop for a check, or if you want to check yourself, put all the valves back in and the spark plugs, then with the heads sitting level, fill the combustion chambers with water. A slow leak = more bent valves. A good time to replace valve stem seals and clean out the hydraulic lifters if they have been noisy.
DeanoTS: Cost me $1,200 for head recon on my TS V6, with me doing the R&R labour.

That's about the right price for a reconditioned engine. A lot of people look for a "good" engine at the wreckers, but with the age of the TR/TS V6, that's not likely. Recon is the only way to go if you plan to keep the car for the next 5 to 10 years.
