need help please
just "stalled" while driving home and won't restart
turns over fine
valves move so timing chain ok.
all plugs ok, no oil water or fuel on em.
has spark.
has fuel.
has no compression on ALL 4 cylinders (only checked with the old stick a finger in test)
not blowing air into radiator.
no hole in the block where a piston has tried to escape.
I'm lost?
help please - ideas?

how many ks on the motor
the rings could easily loose the tension when hot
they are aprox $50 a set
or the valve seats worn (re lap )
so you can take the head off and inspect the valves for leakage
and re ring the motor in the car with the sump off

about 300k plus on it, but it ran fine up until Sunday night.
for all 4 to lose compression at once simply can't be rings?
i'm thinking now maybe timing chain has slipped, or tensioner has broken?
are these motors interferrance (ie: will the pistons hit the valves if timing is out?)

rotate the motor so its at TDC on the timing pully
pop off the dissy cap see if rotor button
is facing straight up to number one cyl
take off the rocker cover and see if the timing dot lines up ok
take out the plugs and do a compression test dry then with a squirt of oil
a wet compression test
the valves dont hit the piston if something goes wrong

cheers mate, most helpful. will have a look this weekend.
it's only a cheapie rally / khanacross car, not a daily :D

i just bought a hilux that has cracked rings on all but one cylinder, all valves are pitted, one piston has a huge chunk missing from the skirt and best of all it spun a big end rod bearing to the degree it was razor thin literally. it was running up until the noise from the bearing got so evident the owner stopped it. but it has very low compression on all but one cylinder but was still running and driving till it stopped.
so it could be that something else has triggered it. i thought the timing chain had slipped to but it had exact timing. so do the comp test as buffy says but often its amazing how far they run down till they stop.

Thanks Jay.
the car did an event on Sunday, and won its class (modified over 2L)
so i don't think it had major problems then, or it wouldn't have beat falccons, crummydores and an S13 :D
but duly noted, will pull it apart and looksee and let you all know

got to love the body role into the turn. that's the only thing i dont like about mine, especially when throwing it around roundabouts it gets a bit scary lol. ide love to see what the ford and especially holden drivers thing when a stock 2.6 4 banger beats them. but i can totally understand why you love the old girl.
there is allot of reason to getting it back on the track to stick it up the rest of them im sure lol.

Put stiffer springs it will help, as it help in my TR body roll. I know it a different car to my one.

update:
ok, rocker cover off, timing chain looks perfect.
little bit of slack, but nowhere near enough to be able to skip teeth.
with No1 at TDC (timing dot on pulley is at TDC), rotor is pointing towards no2 cylinder - this is normal?
i sorta thought at TDC, rotor would point towards no1 ?? (as per above post)
after chatting to a mate, think it's prob blown the HG between cylinders, hence no compression, but also why no oil in water or vice versa.
should really go buy a comp tester...
will rip off head next weekend and looksee and report back
magna buff

the rotor brass bit should be closer to number one than two
what may have happened is
the rubber ring on the harmoninc balancer has weakened or moved
this would change the position of tdc at the crank
and not at the dissy
damian
18-10-2011, 02:45 PM
hmmm ok...
so if that rubber ring has moved, then the balance shaft can also move which will mess up the timing??

i cant see timing dropping comp on all cylinders. madlante from sa has a manaul he was selling .rotor should be pionting to the conector plug on the dizzy wich is number 1 on the cap hope this helps.

I have had several 2.6 motors where the balancer has come loose
and cant time them with a light
not a chain problem at all
may explain why the rotor position looks wrong
the brass bit of the rotor has to be at the number one cyl on the cap
when the timing mark shows on the balancer is at tdc (manually..turned by hand)
from millstp http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64638
best to check this before you take off the head
because it it isnt in correct position it wont start after the rebuild
damian

thanks both for the tips.
that link to the head thread is great thankyou.
question - how is the timing chain pulley staying up?
what is stopping it and/or the chain from dropping?
yeah I'll have to get a manual, um, ah, erm, I don't even know where the balance shaft is
but I'm learning
magna buff

there is a metal ledge just below the cam
inside the timing cover
you keep the timing chain on the cog and it
rests on that support till you go to refit after you replace the head
the dot on the top timing cog is at 3 oclock
the scroll pin has to be at 12 oclock and tigtened by the 22mm nut
rocker bolts are 19 nm max head bolts torque will be on the gasket set (VRS)
if re ringing the motor
sump gasket has to be bought qenuine mitsubishi only

damian

ok zero compression in all 4
when somebody else is turning the key and I'm close to the motor, there's a noise like pistons hitting valves.
timing chain is well loose
executive decision to scrap her and fix the stigma
she served us well, 2 trophies in 2 events, so it's off to magna heaven
if anybody wants any parts for next to nothing, or even nothing!, post away or pm
windscreen is brand brand new, only fitted 5 weeks ago
come take it for a couple classic chocolates :-)
the car will be gone by Friday
TN wagon manual air con
thanks for all your help guys
I still have 2 other magnas btw :-)

you can do in car rebuilds in theses car . no need to remove the motor. i,ve done two in car rebuilds there not hard
damian

yeah but - no garage. it's all done ghetto spec in the street.
not a good look ;-)
next event is in 2 weeks
next weekend will be officialling at Kuitpo rally
so no time to repair either
take back rego $100
battery for dads tractor saved $80
wreckers come and get it $130
buy another car, running, today $200
so I'm in front $110, which will almost pay for rego on it
we'd love to keep the wagon, but all good things must come to an end
