Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows much about the Huyndai Grandeur?
And whether it is a cheaper alternative to a Verada?

It uses a DOHC 6G72 motor and has the 5 speed auto (same as the later Verada boxes?).
Also they seem to be better spec'd etc for less money.

The older ones I wouldn't bother with IMO. The newer ones, from about 2006 onward, were much better. They had the 3.8L with 194kW. I looked at them when I was buying the 380 but couldn't find one locally with low Ks.

Earlier ones had a reputation for terrible handling. Autospeed had an interesting article, I think entitled "HMS Grandeur". The later ones were much better but still very average in the handling department, certainly no match for the 380 in this area.

Some of the stuff from the eariler ones might be able to be bolted into the magna. Seats? Dash? Depends on how much the chassis was modified.

Front quarter pannels, bumper and bonnet + head lights would make a very unique looking magna.

Yeah - just decided I'm going to look for the service manual for one of these.

Actually to be honest my main concerns are reliability, fuel economy, and comfort.
I do not care for handling etc. So just wondering if, at least for my needs, it is a cheaper and better spec'd alternative to a Verada?
PS. I was talking about a 2000 model or so

We had one for a while, economy was as good if not better than the magnas.
The tippy was better too, quicker and more responsive.
Overall we loved it, bloody amazing car in every way.
Its even cheap and easy on parts if you shop through a seller called mirine in korea.
I still have a manual on disc and a few other bits here for it.
We had NO problems keepin up with the lowered, big tyre boys in the twisties :woot:
Get the top model (XG) if you can with all the goodies.
If it hadnt been swiped we would still be driving it now.

Can you comment more on the reliability and fuel economy please?
What Magna are you comparing it to?
And what about cabin noise etc?

Kurt, I assume you are talking about the newer ones.
I was posting in regards to the 2000ish models

I was comparing it to th TJ 3.5 we have ATM

The grandy was better on fuel and quiet as on a trip.

The magnas couldnt get away from me in the twisties, especially downhill.

Ours got taken for a joy ride without coolant in it and they stuffed it so we sold it.

If you were looking at buying a Verada, would you buy the Grandeur instead today?

depending on the price, if I planned on keeping it, I would go the Grandeur

Just do your research on what they are worth these days and get the lowest mileage one you can (same for most cars:) )

The grandeurs did have an issue with their dashs.. They would start cracking and popping at the edges..

Something to look for.. My mate bought one as a work car and it went in twice for replacement dashes.. That was a 2001 Grandeur XG..

Yea, that can be an issue, you need to use a good quality dashboard treatment and if it lifts at all glue it back down straight away or they can shrink.

Didnt bother me though and Im a fussy old bastard :D

Quick note ....... they were sold overseas as the XG300 if yur googling them at all

What about the 5 speed gearbox, is it the same as the Verada/Magna 5 speed range?

The 6G74 grandeur only came in 4sp auto or 5sp manual.

Nope, my XG was a 5 speed tippy :)

But that wasnt a 6g74 motor, it was a hyundai sigma v6 type

The Sigma motor is a 6G7X engine.
And I thought they were only 3.0L?

the Sigma was both 3.0 and 3.5. Just did some research and sounds like Hyundai literally started making the 6G7 motors themselves and giving it a different engine code...so in theory all transmissions should be interchangable.

I think the similarities stopped when the 3.8's turned up. Hyundai's 3.8 is designed and built in house IIRC and nothing to do with the mitsubishi 6G75

Does this mean that the Grandeur would have the more reliable gearbox from the newer Mitsubishis?

A lot of people seem to think they are interchangeable.
While they are similar, they arnt swapable.
The tranny is far more resposive than the magna one thats for sure.
Ive driven both and the grandeurs programming is much better.

Why aren't they swappable if the engines are essentially the same?

The responsiveness will most likely be a software thing. The transmission retunes offered on the 5sp magna autos help a lot to making them more drivable

Im talking about parts within the engine etc.
