$600 sounds like a bit of a rip for one shaft/cv joint .... the driveshaft is about $150, so they're asking about $450 for labour. Your average mechanic should be able to replace a one in less than an hour. If its both for $500-600 then it isn' too bad but how do you destroy two cv joints at once?

Seriously for that kind of money I'd attempt to do it myself. Spend $40 to get a service manual for super cheap auto and then you'll need about $150 to get the right tools - e.g. cv joint puller (http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=inner+cv+joint+puller&_sacat=See-All-Categories), tie rod remover/pitman arm puller and a decent ratchet & socket (to get the bolt on the end of the shaft off). A shaft from Mal is around $150 so you'd save $250 by doing it yourself.

Maybe chuck some grog into the mix too and you might even have someone here from the forums willing to help ....

Otherwise if you're after some recommendations for mechanics then I've got a few. I know a very oldschool mechanic who does good work for cheap but doesn't work much with newer cars. Mal's always a good choice but he might be out of action for a little while with MMXi and all the back log of work left afterwards. I've had car my ball joint replaced at a place called Scoresby Automotive and I was very happy with the service and the cost - I will go back if I need something fixed in a hurry and can't get the car to Montrose for Mal.

Good luck with it...

If you're in Vic.. I got a quote from Mal for both CVs for a great price!

I'd be knocking on his door..
