Just a quick question for anyone in the know.

Whilst driving on the weekend my power steering belt broke. Should I still be able to start the car without one? It cranks over when I turn the key but doesn't fire.

Asked a mechanic friend about this and he reckons it should still start up even without the belt. I'm wondering if I have done some other damage and it won't be just a simple belt replacement to get it going again.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

It should start and run without the belt unless when it failed it got twisted around the pulleys and somehow damaged the crank angle sensor or some other critical sensor. Anything is possible if they break at high revs and thrash around the engine bay. May just have pulled a connector off somewhere so I'd look very closely for witness marks.
